Algarithm is a Saskatoon-based company that specializes in producing high value omega-3 oil derived from microalgae by use of chemical-free extraction and process. Our focus is the production of high-quality ingredients for use in supplement, nutraceuticals, food, beverage, and childhood/infant nutrition products. We strive to make the consumption of Omega-3s easy, enjoyable, and eco-friendly through out patented processes, innovative delivery methods and novel applications. Algarithm has an immediate need for a full time R&D technologist, in the department of Research & Development (R&D), based in Dartmouth, NS. Responsibilities:
  • Reporting to the R&D manager, the R&D technologist performs laboratory scale R&D activities for prototype development of food/supplement in the lab for proof of concept
  • Assisting in ingredient sourcing, literature review, developing new process and analysis methods
  • Assisting in planning, organizing, conducting trials in pilot scale runs
  • Conducting basic chemistry analysis and knowledge and experience in sensory analysis is an asset
  • Recording experiment data and observation, collecting, and analyzing experimental results, organizing results into appropriate formats, and presenting results to the team and other groups within the organization.
  • Clean and maintain labware and equipment; properly handle chemical waste; maintain a safe and tidy work environment.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in Biochemical Engineering, Applied Food Science, or a related discipline. Relevant professional experience, a chemistry degree in a related discipline and/or training in GLP/GMP are considered assets.
  • Practical experience with is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience with chemistry and analytical laboratory protocols.
  • Experience at conducting scientific experiments, recording results, and data analysis.
  • Must be able to think analytically and critically and take the initiative in conducting laboratory tasks. Must exhibit a hands-on approach in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a dynamic team environment, as well as ability to work independently.
  • Must organize work time flexibly according to the requirements of the tasks.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office; demonstrated experience with technical writing, Excel for data processing, and DoE/statistical software is desired.
  • Comfortable in working with hazardous chemicals, compressed gases and steam, and heavy equipment (40 lbs +).
