The Language and Literacy Lab (LLL) at Dalhousie University is an interdisciplinary team of researchers who support a large-scale research program dedicated to understanding the skills children and adults need to achieve full literacy. Job Summary
Reporting to the Lab Director, the Lab Manager willsupport the overall organization and function of all aspects of the Language and Literacy Lab\xe2\x80\x99s research program.


Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate research projects from conception to dissemination with varying degrees of involvement as established on a project-by-project basis including but not limited to project planning, setting goals and timelines, measure and task development, obtaining ethical approval, liaising with industry, educational, and research partners, participant recruitment, staffing, purchasing supplies and materials, organizing data collection and data management, and supporting dissemination of findings.
  • Work with and support collaborators at other institutions on connected projects and partnerships.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise volunteers, research assistants, and, as required, students.
  • Perform data collection in schools and childcare centres, as required.
  • Lead all financial, human resources, and administrative duties of managing the lab, including but not limited to data management, file structuring, management of grants, grant and ethics writing, maintaining the website, budget forecasts, ethics annual reports, purchasing equipment and supplies, scheduling, etc.
  • Regularly report progress to the Lab Director, or designate.



Note

Occasional work on evenings and weekends as well as travel to schools, daycare and child-care centers, and other locations across Nova Scotia, as necessitated by the LLL research program will be required.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Dalhousie\xe2\x80\x99s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.


Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate in Arts or Science with a major or minor in Psychology or other related degree/diploma/certificate (e,g,. Linguistics).
  • Experience in a research environment.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with others.
  • Excellent judgment and discretion in handling confidential and/or sensitive information.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to handle multiple deadlines and concurrent activities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and willingness to travel to schools in HRM and rural Nova Scotia as needed (a vehicle is not required as the lab subscribes to CarShare).
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record, Vulnerable Sector, and Child Abuse Registry checks.



Assets
  • Honours degree in Arts or Science.
  • Previous research management and supervisory experience.
  • Experience working in a school environment, administering experimental and/or standardized tests, conducting systematic literature reviews, using statistical software (e.g., SPSS), and social media management.
