Legal Aid Alberta is seeking to fill a full-time permanent Criminal Trial Group Lawyer who services the Edmonton Court Centre, Edmonton Regional Courts and the Indigenous Courts. This position will appeal to an individual who likes to take initiative, is client-focused and is exceptionally strong in delivering high-quality results. Reporting to the Legal Services Manager, some of the key responsibilities include:
Provide holistic legal services support to clients.
Resolution and negotiation with the Crown on behalf of the client on criminal matters.
Litigate at various court levels, including appeals (travel expected).
Conduct assigned files to professional standards and in accordance with the Rules and Code of Conduct of the Law Society of Alberta and the policies and procedures of LAA.
Complete accurate record keeping (statistical and time tracking) and file management.
Compliance with office policy and procedures.
Participate in performance and staff meetings as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Law degree from a recognized law school.
Active, practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
Minimum 2 years of experience in criminal defense with experience conducting criminal trials. Recent criminal law practice with a particular focus on Indigenous experience and issues within the criminal justice system including familiarity with Gladue reports and Indigenous support services.
