The Kitchen Manager is responsible for the safe and efficient provision of food and support services to the residents of Abbeyfield House.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilitate a harmonious environment for residents by:
Interacting with the residents in a pleasant and tactful manner;
Assisting the Residency Committee and House Manager in the orientation of new residents to the House and its policies & procedures;
Respecting the residents' rights to confidentiality;
Answering the phone and logging calls in daily log according to established procedures provided;
Ensuring a safe environment by monitoring visitors to the house.
Provide food services:
Coordinates the timely and efficient preparation and delivery of food services to residents;
Plans balanced menus on a monthly basis in consultation with the residents;
Implements all aspects of food services in accordance with health regulations;
Ensures that food and cleaning supplies are purchased and delivered to meet the ongoing needs of the House within the established budget for this purpose;
Communicates with relief cooks to ensure that all meals are served as per the planned menu and in accordance with identified resident dietary requirements and preferences;
Communicates with staff, volunteers and live-in assistant to ensure that breakfast and dinner service, including clean-up, is completed according to established procedures and that the schedule for each shift is posted in the kitchen.
Assist with health support to residents:
Maintains awareness of the use and contents of the House First-Aid Kit and the location of wheelchairs in accordance with established emergency procedures;
Responds in a timely manner to emergency room calls;
Records any change in a resident's health status in the staff communication binder and reports changes to the House Manager or Director of Residency;
Notifies the House Manager or Director of Residency and/or resident sponsor of any illness or injury.
Maintain a safe and clean house environment:
Ensure a clean, well-organized kitchen;
Maintain kitchen equipment for the safe and efficient delivery of food services to residents;
Request that cleaning staff clean out refrigerators as required;
Maintain awareness of all safety and emergency policies and procedures;
Ensure operations are in line with health and safety regulations and correct any deficiencies identified by Health inspectors in a timely manner;
Contact appropriate service people using the contact list provided by Property Manager to address emergency repairs.
Qualifications:
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent;
Experience cooking for large groups in a professional setting;
Knowledge of proper food preparation, nutrition and Canada's Food Guide;
Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations;
Knowledge of First Aid or willingness to acquire;
Excellent interpersonal skills to interface with seniors in a caring and tactful manner;
Experience in preparing and serving family style and special dietary meals;
Some studies in and/or basic knowledge of gerontology preferred;
Ability to take direction and to function in an organization operated by volunteers.
