Job Description


Resume and Cover letter required with application Role Summary Reporting to the Associate Director (AD), the Key Navigator (KN) works to assist young people, ages 12-24, who are residents in the Dorm Program or are accessing the Emergency Shelter and appropriate for the Dorms. The Youth Dorm program supports youth to achieve increased independence, encourages reconnection with family and/or important people in their lives, and to function more successfully in the community, while residing in a safe and supportive housing environment. Responsibilities

  • Actively support practice guidelines, program goals and expectations of Home Base Yellowknife
  • Complete any and all training/professional development opportunities provide by HomeBase including Onboarding Training, at your own pace training (during shifts), online/virtual and in-person training eventsTraining opportunities are designed to
  • Engage the youth to identify social, recreational, and educational services in the community that will meet their needs
  • Support youth to engage in the development of a service plan with attainable goals and a transition plan to independent living
  • Connect youth to resources in the community not limited to education, employment, housing, life skills, addictions, and mental health
  • Maintain an active caseload of 4-6 youth from intake into the Dorm Program to transition to independent living or other housing options, including family home or placementMinimum of 2-hours of one-to-one contact per week per youth on caseload
  • Engage daily with each youth in residence in the Dorms
  • Maintain regular contact with support services (guardian, YHSSA, Justice, School, Employers, etc), and other professionals and support services that may become involved with the youth
  • Provide transportation as needed to ensure the youth attends school/tutoring (as appropriate), scheduled appointments (not limited to Dr., Lawyer, Probation, counseling, work) court appearance, HBYK programming outside the Dorms when possible
  • Ensure HBYK is a safe space for all youth and staff, including 2SLGBTQQIPAA+ persons
  • Ensure identification of safety risks are identified and apply appropriate intervention
  • Complete safety plans with youth where appropriate
  • Develop strategies to deal with potentially dangerous situations; i.e., suicide threats, AWOL\xe2\x80\x99s, youth\xe2\x80\x99s aggressive behavior
  • Assess, evaluate and plan to prevent crisis situations whenever possible
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety precautions dealing with environmental working conditions such as potential verbal and physical aggression

  • Driver Assessment will be conducted to ensure safe operation of fleet vehicles
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma (required)
  • Fluency in English (comprehension, verbal & written) (required)
  • Secondary Education, Diploma or Degree) Youth Work, Social Work or other Human Services field (asset)Relevant lived experience in Human or Social Services field will be assessed on a case by case basis
SOFT SKILLS
  • Punctual and reliable (required)
  • Strong social and emotional skills
  • Strong communication skills necessary to confidently communicate with youth, coworkers, supervisors, community members, professionals, law enforcement, court workers, teachers, etc.
  • Experience working with youth, youth who are experiencing homelessness, youth experiencing varying levels of trauma, and youth with disabilities
  • An understanding of homelessness in Canada, homelessness interventions, and factors that lead to homelessness
  • An understanding of various forms of discrimination including racism, sexism, transphobia, and homophobia
  • Fluent in the use of Google Docs and Microsoft Word Suites
  • Experience writing case notes
  • Experience coordinating case conferences
  • Ability to collaborate well with others
Other Qualifications
  • Must reside in Yellowknife, this is an on-site position that can not be worked remotely
  • Minimum of 19 years of age
  • VISA with Current Status to work in Canada
  • Full Class 5 license + minimum of 1 year experience as a fully licensed driver
  • Clear Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Abstract
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
  • Child and Family Services Check (as necessary)
