The Kennel Manager for the Humane Society Yukon (HSY) is responsible to the Executive Director for the management of all kennel staff and volunteers, which includes training and performance evaluation. The Kennel Manager is also responsible for the care and well-being of all animals and to report any concerns of an individual or group of animals to the Executive Director.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience -

  • Experience working in animal husbandry;
  • An advanced understanding of kennel/cattery maintenance including daily routine procedures, and cleaning;
  • An advanced understanding of health issues, infection control and vaccinations in companion animal;
  • Experience in animal comfort care including dealing with nervous and disturbed animal;
  • Experience in training of staff and/or volunteers;
  • Excellent communication skills; and
  • Demonstrated passion for animal well-being and care for domestic animals.
Desired qualifications, skills and experience -
  • Experience in junior or mid-level management; and
  • Post-secondary education in animal sciences.
Primary Duties -
  • Ensuring a priority is made for the health and well-being of all shelter animals, with the eventual goal of placement;
  • Supervise all kennel staff and volunteers and ensuring all daily tasks and duties are completed;
  • Provide staff and volunteer continual feedback on performance with the objective of constant improvement; also, provide an annual formal performance evaluation for all staff;
  • Identify training opportunities for staff;
  • Ensure kennel/cattery is well supplied with essential equipment and submit deficiencies to the Operations Manager;
  • Administer or supervise the administration of medications and vaccinations;
  • Ensure documentation is kept current and is filed;
  • Perform daily assessments on animal physical and mental health and well-being;
  • Ensure kennel staff and volunteers observe general and occupational safety and ensure a safe work environment;
  • Make recommendation for facility preventative or corrective maintenance;
  • Remain current on all HSY policies, territorial laws and regulations and municipal by-laws and regulations;
  • Liaise with customers/members of public with respect to adoptions, animal history and recommendations on care or training of adopted animals;
  • Any other duties as detailed by the Executive Director.
