Job Overview


We are seeking a dedicated and professional K9 Handler to join our team.

The K9 Handler is responsible for working with a trained detection dog to conduct searches for illegal drugs and controlled substances in designated areas, vehicles, containers, cargo, luggage, or personal belongings. The handler ensures the K9's readiness, safety, and welfare while maintaining accurate records of all searches, alerts, and findings. This role requires a high degree of integrity, attention to detail, and strong communication and handling skills.

Location


This role's location would be based in Yellowknife, NT. You may be required to travel with the K9 to various locations as needed. Air travel to remote locations may also be required.

Key Job Duties



K9 Operations



Conduct routine and targeted narcotics detection sweeps in facilities, vehicles, aircraft, luggage, cargo, and other assigned areas. Interpret and respond appropriately to the K9 indications of narcotic detection. Follow established search procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy, and legal compliance. Maintain control of the K9 at all times and ensure the safety of all personnel during operations. Document all searches, alerts, and results accurately and promptly in required reports or logs. Conduct thorough and systematic searches independently, ensuring all evidence is located, secured, and documented to investigative standards.

K9 Care & Training



Ensure the daily care, feeding, exercise, and grooming of the assigned K9. Conduct regular training exercises to maintain and enhance the K9's detection skills and responsiveness. Keep training records current and participate in certification or re-certification as required. Ensure appropriate welfare measures during and after deployments, including environmental safety, hydration, rest, and veterinary follow-up when needed. Monitor the K9's health and behavior, reporting any concerns to the supervisor or veterinary personnel. Participate in regular scenario-based training and scheduled re-certification to maintain operational readiness and compliance with detection standards.

Documentation & Reporting



Complete detailed incident and detection reports in compliance with company policy and applicable laws. Maintain chain-of-custody procedures for evidence or suspected contraband. Ensure all records related to K9 performance, training, and deployments are organized and up to date. Prepare detailed and factual reports for independent operations, including search context, observations, actions taken, and evidence handling steps.

Compliance & Professionalism



Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies governing K9 detection operations. Ensure all searches, notifications, and evidence handling are conducted in accordance with applicable legal requirements, including privacy and Charter protections. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism during sensitive operations. Assist with demonstrations, public relations, or community engagement activities when required. Cooperate with law enforcement agencies during joint operations or investigations.

Position Qualifications



Education & Experience



High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in law enforcement, security, or related field preferred. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in security, law enforcement, or military service preferred. Prior experience as a K9 handler or completion of a recognized K9 handler training program strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



Strong understanding of K9 handling techniques and narcotics detection principles. Ability to read and interpret K9 behavior accurately. Strong understanding of search protocols and investigative evidence handling. Excellent recordkeeping and report writing skills. Strong situational awareness and decision-making ability under pressure. Physical ability to handle, train, and care for an active working dog. High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion. Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Licenses / Certifications



Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. K9 Handler Certification (drug detection) from a recognized training organization (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire). Active Security license preferred.

Working Conditions



Work performed in a variety of environments including indoor facilities, outdoor areas, and vehicles. Exposure to noise, varying weather conditions, and potentially hazardous materials. Requires physical stamina to walk, stand, and lift moderate weights during shifts. Must be available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call assignments. Responsible for the care and housing of the assigned K9, which may include off-duty housing and care at the handler's residence (if applicable).

Pay: $55,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
