The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 continues its tradition of welcoming newcomers to Canada.

The Welcome Home to Canada (WHTC) program is a six month employability program for new immigrants to Canada. If you are an unemployed or underemployed immigrant and facing barriers to meaningful employment this program may be an option for you.

We currently have an opening for a Junior Systems Administrator as part of the 2025 Welcome Home to Canada program.

Wages:

$17.75 per hour

Reports to:

Information Technology Manager

Hours:

37.5 hours a week with two (2) paid rest periods of 15 minutes and one 30 minute unpaid lunch break each day. As the Museum operates 7 days a week, the workweek includes Saturdays and/or Sundays and irregular hours (evenings, weekends)

Program eligibility*

You must be either a permanent resident of Canada, Canadian citizen born outside of Canada (this means you have immigrated to Canada and have become a Canadian citizen) or a protected person as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act who is legally entitled to work in Canada and Nova Scotia

AND

You are unemployed or underemployed and facing barriers to employment such as lack of previous Canadian work experience, foreign credentials, language barriers or lack of professional networks.

Position Summary

The Junior System Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day support and troubleshooting of all Museum software and equipment (desktops, laptops, printers, etc.). The Junior System Administrator will perform project tasks as identified by the IT Manager and is responsible for completing all necessary paperwork associated with documenting and maintaining the integrity of the IT infrastructure for the organization, on behalf of the IT Manager. The Junior System Administrator will be results-oriented and have the demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize workflow.

Responsibilities

Technical Support

Performs the day-to-day hardware and software maintenance duties as required on any IT system and/or computer across the organization

Troubleshoots and corrects hardware/software computer and network problems and/or concerns

Assists with the maintenance and operation of all IT systems across the organization

Ensures all daily and/or weekly tasks including backups are completed successfully

Undertakes all project tasks as assigned by the IT Manager

Performs other duties as required

Administration

Prepares reports accurately and in a timely manner, as needed

Develops user guides with procedures and processes for end-users

Provides IT information and support to other departments as needed by using knowledge of the organization's IT infrastructure Documents and regularly updates procedures and processes as required

Manages multiple deliverables and deadlines appropriately

Exercises independent thought and judgment over resolution of technical issues and/or problems

Skills Required

Diploma in Information Technology with an emphasis in Systems Management/Networking or related field of study and/or experience in a similar role

Very proficient in troubleshooting techniques

Must have a knowledge of Windows or Linux System Administration

Must have a knowledge of Microsoft Office and related products

Must have a knowledge of PC hardware and software

Very proficient in networking - hardware and software

Proven ability to develop procedures, process and implement effectively and efficiently

Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively

Able to multitask effectively

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

Proven ability to be self-motivated, independent and effectively prioritize work flow

Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision and to develop working relationships with all members of the organization creating a strong team environment

Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 kgs

Good verbal and written communication skills

Skills and Qualifications - Desired

The ability to communicate in both official languages, oral and written, is an asset

Experience with specialty programs such as ERP Software, donor relationship management software, etc. is an asset

Experience in a server-based environment is an asset

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Work is in an office environment and/or a server environment and will require long periods at a desk, reading lengthy documents, and time in front of a computer
