Summerhill Market is a boutique grocery store chain in Toronto, known for our scratch-made prepared foods and thoughtfully curated grocery offerings. At the center of our culinary program is the Commissary Kitchen, where more than 700 diverse dishes are prepared from scratch each week--ranging from Thai and Indian entrees to sushi, fresh rolls, and hot meals.

We are looking for a

Junior Sous Chef

to help lead daily production at the Commissary. This is a hands-on cooking role suited to someone with strong technical skills, multicultural culinary experience, and a proven ability to guide large teams.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Sous Chef, the Junior Sous Chef helps oversee day-to-day operations across multiple stations. You'll lead by example, cooking alongside a team of 20+ cooks and prep staff while ensuring quality, consistency, and efficiency. This role also provides flexible coverage across the Commissary, supporting dynamic production needs as they arise.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise and lead production across Thai, Indian, Sushi, Hot Side, and Fresh Roll stations Work alongside the team to maintain speed, accuracy, and consistency in every dish Train and coach staff on techniques, station standards, and food safety practices Assist with prep coordination, inventory, and production scheduling Monitor food quality, portioning, and presentation in line with company standards Ensure cleanliness, organization, and compliance with health & safety regulations Support the Sous Chef with scheduling, reporting, and administrative duties Step in as needed to support special production runs or fill staffing gaps
Qualifications

5+ years of professional cooking experience in a commercial kitchen 3+ years of leadership experience managing teams of 20+ staff Hands-on knowledge of global cuisines and high-volume production Strong knife skills, precision, and attention to detail Valid Food Handler's Certification (required) Comfortable working in hot and cold kitchen environments Excellent communication and collaborative leadership style Tech-savvy and adaptable to kitchen systems and production tools Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while maintaining quality
