Mota Law Firm is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Associate to join our criminal defence team. This is an excellent opportunity for a new or early-career lawyer with a passion for advocacy, criminal justice, and protecting individual rights. The successful candidate will assist senior counsel in delivering strategic, client-focused defences across a range of criminal matters.
Key Responsibilities
Assist senior lawyers in preparing for trials, bail hearings, and preliminary inquiries
Conduct legal research and draft legal documents, including facta, submissions, and correspondence
Attend court appearances, including set-date and remand courts, on behalf of clients
Meet with clients to gather facts, explain the legal process, and provide updates
Review disclosure and assist in developing case strategies
Maintain organized client files and ensure timely communication with clients and court staff
Stay informed about developments in criminal law and legal procedures
Requirements
License to practice law in Ontario (or articling student awaiting call to the bar)
Strong written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated interest in criminal law and defence advocacy
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Strong interpersonal skills and a client-centered approach
Courtroom experience (e.g. through clinics, externships, or articling) is an asset
