The De Beers Group has an opportunity within the Technical Services Department for a highly motivated Junior Kimberlite Petrologist/Geologist based at the Calgary Kimberlite Petrology Laboratory. Reporting to the Principal, Mineral Resource Manager - Canada the incumbent will support the development of kimberlite models from all activities related to logging and sampling to petrological data interpretation to 3D modelling the kimberlite bodies. These models support resource development and mine planning activities. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, takes a hands-on approach to their work and is passionate about geosciences as well as being committed to safe working practices and zero harm.

This if a full-time position for 12+ months and may require ad hoc travel to Gahcho Ku\xc3\xa9 Mine (in the Northwest Territories) and other projects within Canada.

  • Supporting the development of kimberlite resource models through the collection and analysis of a variety of related geological data sets generated through core logging, thin section and slab petrographic analysis, geochemistry and related sampling;
  • Working closely with the Kimberlite Petrology Lead to interpret the results to create integrated geological models for use in decision making and mine planning;
  • Managing data;
  • Core photography and file management;
  • Building strong working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders; and
  • Staying abreast of new technologies and their potential application to kimberlite geology.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of two (2) years of geological experience preferred. Co-op or summer work terms in geology is valuable experience that will also be considered;
  • Professionally Accredited Geoscientist or Geoscientist in Training or eligibility for accreditation;
  • BSc or MSc in Geology with a focus on igneous systems, volcanology and petrology.
  • Knowledge of kimberlite processes would be an advantage;
  • Experience in logging drill core, taking analytical measurements (e.g. density and sampling), thin section microscopy to support the creation of geological models;
  • Experience with geological modelling software such as Gems and Leapfrog would be an advantage;
  • Excellent planning, time management, problem solving and analytical skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a cross functional business team;
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, environmental standards and community; and
  • Willingness to travel to potentially remote De Beers mine sites and exploration properties.
