By working on the development and growth of the Natural Resources & Impact Assessment business group, you will participate in a wide variety of projects within interdisciplinary teams located in Eastern Canada where GHD has over 400 employees deployed in 12 offices. Our team works for a wide range of clients located across Eastern Canada, including the mining, coastal infrastructure, and renewable energy industries.
We are currently looking for a Junior Biologist to join our team in Halifax.
Responsibilities:

  • Sampling and Testing: Collect a range of environmental samples and conduct testing as directed, following defined protocols to support regulatory compliance and ecological assessments. Participate in wetland assessments and flora and fauna inventories as part of field-based ecological evaluations.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and input data from various standard sources into structured formats to support technical reporting. Manage ecological databases, analyze field data, and prepare technical reports. Determine ecological constraints applicable to infrastructure design projects.
  • Solutions Analysis: Interpret ecological and environmental data to identify potential solutions or mitigation strategies. Navigate a variety of procedures and precedents to support impact assessments and habitat planning.
  • Insights and Reporting: Contribute to the preparation of data-driven reports and analytics for internal and external stakeholders. Support environmental impact assessments and permit applications through clear and accurate reporting.
  • Document Preparation: Organize and prepare complex documents using standard office software. Gather and summarize data for inclusion in technical reports, monitoring plans, and special submissions.
  • Habitat Management: Participate in ecological characterizations and habitat compensation programs. Contribute to the management of saltwater and freshwater habitats with a focus on conservation and restoration.
  • Bid Solicitation/Request for Proposal/Tender Preparation: Collaborate in the preparation of proposals and support business development initiatives related to ecological services.
  • Client & Customer Management (External): Assist senior colleagues in managing client relationships using appropriate systems and tools. Support communication and coordination with clients during project planning and delivery.
  • Community of Practice Management:Participate in communities of practice to build expertise in ecological consulting and environmental compliance. Share knowledge and contribute to best practices within the team and broader organization.
  • Project Management: Work within established project plans to achieve ecological and environmental objectives. Support coordination of field activities, data management, and reporting deliverables.
  • Health, Safety, and Environment: Follow organizational HSE policies and procedures to ensure safe fieldwork and environmental stewardship. Identify and mitigate risks to personal and team safety; escalate concerns as needed.
  • Personal Capability Building: Engage in formal and informal training, coaching, and development planning. Maintain current knowledge of ecological science, environmental regulations, and industry best practices through ongoing education and professional development.
What you will bring to the Team:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology (a master's degree will be an asset). A college diploma in wildlife management or a related field combined with years of experience may be considered equivalent.
  • Between 0 and 2 years of professional experience in biology.
  • Good knowledge of identification keys in fauna and botany as well as Nova Scotia guidance and methods for the characterization and delineation of wetlands and watercourses.
  • Experience in conducting fish and fish habitat assessments, avifauna, and herpetofauna inventories.
  • Good knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation.
  • Good technical writing skills.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and vehicle.
  • Availability for short-term travel.
