THE OPPORTUNITY

Terry Fox House is a 24/7, live-in program which provides services to young men involved in the youth justice system, who are placed in either open custody or detention. As part of their daily programming, youth from Terry Fox House and two other open custody/detention organizations attend classes at the same school.

Reporting to the Supervisor, the Educational Support Worker plays a key role in maintaining safety, structure, and trauma-informed support in the school environment, while also providing program support at Terry Fox House when school is not in session.

Requirements:

School-Based Responsibilities (Primary Focus)

The Educational Support Worker is primarily responsible for supporting the safety and success of youth attending the TDSB partnership school. Youth supported are from Terry Fox House, and two other organizations operating open custody/detention programs. Duties include:

Daily Security & Arrival Procedures

o Arrive at the school at 8am to complete security/perimeter checks

o Communicate with program drivers to coordinate staggered entry to individual classrooms

o Consistent radio usage to keep classroom staff updated on program arrivals



Classroom & School Safety

o Ensure all classroom and section doors remain secured and ensure student safety

o Monitor hallways and exterior areas for suspicious activity

o Escort youth to washrooms and kitchen areas, and search facilities pre-and post-use

o Ongoing tracking of youth movement to ensure safety and that youth don't intersect, including for outdoor recreational activities



Youth Behavioural & Classroom Support

o Provide support in classrooms when behavioural concerns arise or when a young person needs to step out of class

o Sit with youth removed from class for self-regulation, or to support meetings, ensuring teaching staff are never alone with a young person

o Support lunch periods by escorting youth to the kitchen and ensuring program staff presence at all times

o Cover classrooms when program staff need to exit temporarily



Dismissal Procedures

o At the end of the school day, ensure safe dismissal by clearing hallways and outdoor areas and coordinating program exits between classrooms



Program-Based Responsibilities (Secondary Focus)

When school is not in session (PA days, holidays, summer, etc.), the Educational Support Worker supports youth directly within the Terry Foxx House program, including:

Assisting youth with hygiene, life skills, social skills, and individualized planning Supporting case management in collaboration with the Senior Counsellor (intakes, meetings, communication with parents/guardians and probation officers) Developing and administering education-based, youth-centered plans Attending court with youth and assisting with appointments as needed Participating in program planning, crisis intervention, and creating a safe, trauma-informed environment in line with ministry standards Preparing/pre-cooking meals following safe food handling protocols

Administration & Professional Development

Maintain timely and accurate notes and logs using case management and other software, as well as other administrative tasks, as per our program model and policies Support in the reporting of statistics and other notes as needed, to support in the program evaluation or other special projects, as assigned Writing Serious Occurrence Reports Level 2s as required; with support from program leadership and Senior Counsellor as needed Perform security calls, house checks and document as per policy Actively participate in individual and team meetings, supervisory meetings, planning sessions, case management meetings, and designated trainings Work effectively with other members of the team Modeling the agency's philosophy and mission statement, as well as the program's Values and Beliefs at all times Other responsibilities as may be assigned Participate in strategic planning and other organizational initiatives and committees as required Regular reporting to funders, internal accounting, and fiscal management of the program budget Execute other responsibilities as necessary to achieve the objectives and deliverables of the program

WHO YOU ARE

Education/Experience

Diploma/Undergraduate Degree in the Social Sciences, Child and Youth Care, Social Work. Related education will be considered. Minimum one year experience working with youth who have experienced trauma in their lives from a trauma-informed framework Experience in crisis prevention and intervention Direct experience engaging with diverse populations and an ability to apply a culturally responsive lens to all interactions, including program implementation and capacity-building with young people Valid G driver's license An understanding of the systemic barriers that young people face and how this may impact youth and their own experiences Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills A demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders effectively, respectfully, and efficiently with minimal supervision Effective understanding and use of technology, including Microsoft Office applications

In addition, the following are considered assets:

Understanding of relevant legislation and institutional policies (including the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Education Act, Safe Schools Act) Experience working within a licensed residential setting considered an asset Current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate, CPI, ASIST Proficiency in French language
