Position: Journeyman Electrician

This field position is responsible for assisting in the construction, assembly, installation, testing and maintenance of electrical equipment i.e. AC & DC distribution panels, Protection control panels telecontrol, and telecommunication panels in buildings, substation installations and other associated electrical equipment in accordance with the company practices, procedures, and external codes.

This position may independently perform duties on energized equipment and apparatus up to 500,000 volts on customer facilities and in substations.

This position may perform administrative duties such as record keeping, data entry, report writing, preparation of safe work procedures, task specific work instruction, Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) documentation and updates to company standards. The individual may be responsible for investigating, interpreting, and explaining AE standards to new employees and external customers. The individual may act as a resource to less experienced staff by providing technical guidance. The position requires the individual to travel extensively to participate on projects in various remote locations.

What You Get to Do:

Construction

Performs construction on electrical facilities and equipment.

Typical Activities:

  • Construction and general wiring of electrical control panels; telecontrol and telecom panels; instrument metering installations, substation and radio buildings including the installation of AC & DC distribution panel, and raceway systems such as but not limited to cable tray.
  • Assists in the supervision of contract crews; may periodically employ a role in directing the work of contractors or other temporary staff.
  • Assists electrical technologists and commissioning staff in the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment.
  • Installs, tests, troubleshoots, and/or maintains electrical equipment or systems (ie. panels at remote site locations)
  • Prepares costs and estimates and initiates work orders.
  • Instructs less experience staff in operation, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Provides backup and support to the Lead Electrician, Power Systems Electrician, Lead Power Systems Electrician and Meter Technologist Team Lead.
  • Organization and administration of on-site 0-1000V Lock Out Tag Out procedures.
  • Organization and coordination of turnkey on-site activities.
Maintenance

May include but not limited to the performing of maintenance and repair on 0-1000V wiring, raceways, AC & DC distribution panels, Telecomm & Telecontrol panels and System Protection Control panels, Light Fixtures.

Typical Activities:
  • Performs general electrical inspection and maintenance; troubleshoots problems, analyzes corrects/repairs, and completes reports.
  • Plan, install and maintain various sizes of raceways including EMT, Rigid Metal and Rigid PVC Conduit and various sizes and compositions of Cable Tray.
  • Plan, install and maintain cable pulling activities including routing, post QA/QC activities
  • Prepare and install new cables and conductors into existing in-service equipment
  • Research existing conductors for coordination for implementation of new equipment in existing installations without unplanned interruption to in service equipment or protection schemes.
  • Construction, testing and installation of ground chains.
  • Assisting Power System Electricians, Electrical Technologists, and others in maintenance/troubleshooting substation equipment such as circuit breakers, switches, potential and current transformers, power transformers, voltage regulators, etc.
  • Test and replace substation battery chargers and batteries.
  • Inspection of cable trenches to ensure proper depth and fill methods.
  • Inspection of installed cables to ensure all installed cables are design compliant.
Loss Management

Implements and complies with all company and regulatory safety and operating practices and procedures.

Typical Activities:
  • Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions.
  • Safe operation of company vehicles and equipment.
  • Participates in safety meetings.
  • Provides daily work plans and completes job safety analysis.
  • Exercises good environmental practices.
  • Participates and assists on incident investigations as required.
Training and Development

Assists in on-the-job training of team members and identifies areas for personal development.

Typical Activities:
  • Plans own work and reviews and recommends enhancements to work procedures.
  • Assists in the development and training of electrical apprentices.
  • Assists in establishing developmental objectives.
  • Maintains accurate and up to date records.
Successfully completes and applies all required training.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma.
  • Alberta and/or Interprovincial Red Seal Certification of proficiency as a Journeyman Electrician.
  • Valid First AID Certification complete with CPR qualification.
  • Valid AB Class 5 Driver's License with a clean driving abstract.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in industrial electrical and/or electrical utility construction.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced and sometimes stressful working environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and sound decision-making ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Suite software such as TEAMS, Outlook, Excel, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively network and build relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and professionally while managing multiple demands and priorities.
  • Extensive travel will be required.
