Position Title

IT Application Specialist (Term-Certain)

Position Summary

The ITS Application Specialist is responsible for managing, supporting, and developing Red Deer Polytechnic's core enterprise applications across academic, administrative, and student service functions. This includes installing, configuring, integrating, upgrading, and maintaining applications while ensuring security, performance, and licensing compliance. The specialist also contributes to application research, design, and enhancement initiatives that align with institutional goals. Acting as a liaison between IT teams, vendors, and end-users, the Specialist works closely with clients to ensure consistent communication, timely issue resolution, and optimal system performance. Responsibilities also include developing and continuously improving custom applications, reports, and scripts to address software gaps, delivering user training, and supporting data analysis and reporting to enable informed decision-making.

Position Responsibilities

Application Administration, Support and Development

Provides daily support for business enterprise systems. This includes monitoring system logs, troubleshooting, handling routine or emergency production issues, and escalating concerns to software providers when required. Develops and delivers tactical requests and enhancements including data extracts, new process setups, and offering improvements to the support business processes. Inspects and resolves system problems quickly and efficiently while maintaining system security, data integrity and minimal service interruption. Develop, monitor and support web based, SaaS and client-server applications integrations and automated data-feeds between software systems and with core IT infrastructure systems.

Technology Research and Implementation

Builds in-house applications and systems when needed, utilizing industry standard tools and programming languages to fill identified gaps. Collaborates with stakeholders and internal team members in the testing of new programs and applications, creating and delivering demonstrations and gathering feedback for improvements. Create and maintain documentation, testing plans, backup configurations and change records to ensure operational continuity throughout the Software Development Lifecycle. Monitoring industry trends and modern practices to recommend and implement/support improvements to development practices.

Training Support

Provide orientation and training to individual or group system users. Develop training and procedures for system users. Write, update, and maintain technical and user manuals or related documentation. Communicate system changes to users.

Required Qualifications

Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent.Computer Sciences or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

ITIL Certification is preferred. Any Project Management, Lean Six Sigma, Business Analysis, or specific Microsoft Applications Certification is desirable.


Experience working at a post-secondary setting and/or knowledge of post-secondary operations.

Database Querying and Reporting

: SQL, ad-hoc reporting tools.

Low-Code Platforms and Enterprise Systems

: Experience with CRM, CMS, RPA, ITSM platforms.

API

Development and Integration

: REST/SOAP APIs, SFTP.

Technical Documentation

: Writing, reviewing, and organizing documentation.

Systems and Application Administration

: Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, Azure, Ellucian Banner, ERP and SaaS platforms.

Programming and Scripting

: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PowerShell, PL/SQL, and C.
