About Our Opportunity
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic\xe2\x80\x99s (MMA) Interpretation Specialist (IS) is responsible for the ongoing development of how the museum interacts with visitors, especially through the use of interpretation, and exhibitions. Core duties are best described as project management and development of exhibitions and interpretation projects. The Interpretation Specialist keeps projects moving along, and ensures projects are aligned with the museum vision and purpose. They are mindful of every opportunity to delight and intrigue audiences through best practices and innovations in museum interpretation, including an application of a lens of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in all aspects of their work. They are motivated to share knowledge and appreciation of our diverse maritime heritage and global maritime connections, past present and future.
The Interpretation Specialist coordinates with internal and external stakeholders, and team members, demonstrating excellent time management, communication, budgeting, procurement, leadership, and team building skills. They are on top of best practices and emerging trends in museum exhibition development and audience engagement. They continually assess the MMA\xe2\x80\x99s inclusion of new, diverse, and alternative perspectives and techniques in interpretation, and of sustainable processes. The IS works closely with the curatorial and senior leadership of the MMA, participating in strategic and operational planning, and they perform other duties, as required. The IS\xe2\x80\x99s work demonstrates a commitment to museum visitors and to their overall experience.
This position reports to the Manager of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
