About Our Opportunity

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic\'s (MMA) Interpretation Specialist (IS) is responsible for the ongoing development of how the museum interacts with visitors, especially through the use of interpretation, and exhibitions. Core duties are best described as project management and development of exhibitions and interpretation projects. The Interpretation Specialist keeps projects moving along, and ensures projects are aligned with the museum vision and purpose. They are mindful of every opportunity to delight and intrigue audiences through best practices and innovations in museum interpretation, including an application of a lens of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in all aspects of their work. They are motivated to share knowledge and appreciation of our diverse maritime heritage and global maritime connections, past present and future.

The Interpretation Specialist coordinates with internal and external stakeholders, and team members, demonstrating excellent time management, communication, budgeting, procurement, leadership, and team building skills. They are on top of best practices and emerging trends in museum exhibition development and audience engagement. They continually assess the MMA\'s inclusion of new, diverse, and alternative perspectives and techniques in interpretation, and of sustainable processes. The IS works closely with the curatorial and senior leadership of the MMA, participating in strategic and operational planning, and they perform other duties, as required. The IS\'s work demonstrates a commitment to museum visitors and to their overall experience.

This position reports to the Manager of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

Primary Accountabilities

Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop project-specific interpretation plans and specifications
  • Coordinate the work of project teams for assigned projects
  • Oversee the development and production of assigned interpretive programs and products
  • Ensure the effectiveness of interpretive programs and products
  • Assist with recruitment and delivery of personal programs, special events and other activities
  • Assist with outreach and promotional activities, including media inquiries
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining exhibits, interpretive equipment and facilities
  • Assist the senior MMA team in preparing strategic and operational plans
Qualifications and Experience

Undergraduate degree plus minimum 5 years professional experience, or a Master\'s degree in related field plus 3 years professional experience, such as museum interpretation, exhibition design and development, public programming, project management. Preference given to candidates with a minimum 3 years\' museum interpretation and exhibition development experience.

The Interpretation Specialist should have knowledge/experience:
  • Advancing principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility
  • Historical research and project writing
  • Interpretative programming techniques
  • Practical knowledge of the maritime and marine sectors
  • Theories and practices of Interpretation development
  • Current trends in museum interpretation and programming
  • Project management
  • Writing for interpretation projects
  • Artifact handling and conservation
  • MS Office Software and applications
Assets Include
  • Specific certification in interpretation and/or museum studies are considered assets.
  • Sketch-up, CAD, 3D modelling, etc.
  • Basic carpentry
  • Digital design

Salary Range: $2,543.38 - $3,091.70 Bi-Weekly
