Interpretation / Life Skills Officer Location: St. John\xe2\x80\x99s, NL Position Type: 4 full-time position till March 31, 2024 with possibility of extension pending budget funding and satisfactory performance Closing date: June 14, 2023
Reporting to the Team Lead - Ukraine Services, the Interpreter/Life Skills Officer is responsible for providing support to the Ukraine Services team by assisting with communication between clients and staff members. The role will also be responsible for providing support to clients by assisting with navigation of government systems, providing information on how to access relevant supports, and ensuring that clients are provided with the necessary information to meet client needs. The Interpreter/Life Skills Officer will process information quickly, concisely and recognize sensitive cultural differences maintaining a professional and courteous conduct. The role will use appropriate terminology and understands common industry procedures and practices. The translation/interpretation required which may involve simple or complex, technical or non-technical subjects. This position will also include assisting clients with understanding of day-to-day tasks in order to feel more comfortable and confident as they navigate their new environments and build a new life in NL, Canada.
Roles and Responsibilities

  • Interpret spoken language between the Ukrainian clients and the staff of the organization, ensuring that both parties can understand and communicate with each other effectively.
  • Responsible for translating written materials such as forms, brochures, or information packets, to ensure that the Ukrainian clients can access information about the organization\'s services.
  • Interpreting rapid and live presentations and orientations for large groups of clients, both in person and online.
  • Assisting Ukraine Services staff with telephone call, off-site appointments, and other services relating to clients settlement needs.
  • Conducting assessments with newcomers in order to identify their individual needs and determine what support they require in order to settle into their new community.
  • Develop support plans that assist newcomers to establish important life skills such as language proficiency, financial management, and cultural competency.
  • Provide ongoing support to the newcomers, offering guidance and advice on a range of topics, including using public transport, housing, accessing local services and resources in the community. Monitor the progress of the newcomers, evaluating the effectiveness of the programs and services provided and making adjustments as needed.

Qualifications and Experience
  • High level of understanding of Ukrainian language and English language is required
  • Ability to rapidly interpret/translate as required 1-3 years of work experience in similar field Attention to detail and skilled in planning and organization Strong interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills
  • Meeting tight deadlines, critical thinking and problem-solving skills Basic Computer skills (MS Officer, Google Suite)

Conditions of Employment
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.
  • Valid class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license with a clean driver\xe2\x80\x99s abstract
  • Flexible to work outside of standard core hours (Monday-Friday 9am-5pm)
  • Position is subject to a satisfactory Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
