About Us

The Safety Branch of the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration is responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management for the protection of the public and workers\' safety through education, outreach, inspection and enforcement, equipment registration, permits, and licenses. Our staff of over 130 employees, located throughout Nova Scotia, do this by using the Pathways to Compliance to enhance compliance of provincially regulated employees, employers, and contractors through setting, promoting, verifying, and enforcing requirements under various pieces of legislation.

Join our team with the Strategic Planning and Accountability division in the Safety branch and you will be a valuable contributor to:

  • Gain experience in policy analysis such as supporting subject matter experts define problems, define desired results and do options analysis;
  • Conduct research
  • Supporting the development of documents, reports, and submissions to senior leadership.
Primary Accountabilities

The Policy team of the Strategic Planning and Accountability division of the Safety Branch aids decision making around complex safety issues by providing advice and guidance related to changing social, economic, and political conditions that impact needed public policies that contribute to workplace safety, the safety of regulated equipment for Nova Scotians and in relation to workers compensation in Nova Scotia, so that policy evolves to meet the needs of a changing society.

As the Policy Intern you will be responsible for researching, analysing and coordinating policy issues and activities related to the Workers Compensation Act. You will work collaboratively as part of the policy team in the Safety Branch to understand issues and to support policy development through analysis and by forming clearly written documents, including briefing notes, that will be used to support decision making on matters related to safety and workers compensation in Nova Scotia.

Qualifications and Experience

You are interested in developing your skills in options analysis, problem definition, research and build your expertise in facilitating discussions to arrive at a recommendation. You possess very good analytical and critical thinking skills.

You possess exceptional communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and relationship building skills. You are able to prioritize competing projects.

You will demonstrate qualifications and experience in analytical thinking, adaptability and flexibility, attention to detail, outcome focus, effective interactive communication, teamwork and collaboration, and intercultural and diversity proficiency.

Applicants must have graduated from a post-secondary institute, such as a university, community college or recognised trade school within the past 3 years of their application.

Additional Information

This is a Term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of April 30, 2024. The appointment status (\'term\', \'temporary\' or \'casual\') is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: PR 06

Salary Range: $1,859.58 - $2,280.31 Bi-Weekly
