Do you have a passion for enabling students to fulfil their academic and immigration goals? We are looking for an International Academic Advisor to support NAIT's diverse group of students.


At NAIT, we use a holistic developmental approach to advising and learning outcomes to help guide our services. The International Academic Advisor will use helping techniques and activities to help students explore their options, and make educational plans and decisions, all while integrating their academic, life, and immigration aspirations. The Advisor will be a dedicated and motivated helping professional who has a high level of intercultural competence and is comfortable working with students from diverse backgrounds. The Advisor will develop a sound knowledge of NAIT internal resources and policies, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada's (IRCC) policies and procedures, and advising theories.


This position requires considerable contact with students through e-mail, one-on-one sessions, and workshops. Advisors are expected to possess or be willing to develop comprehensive knowledge about academic programs, funding options, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities. In addition, Advisors must stay up to date on the IRCC policies and procedures that impact international students during their student lifecycle (specifically, be prepared to advise students on study-permit conditions, co-op work permits, working permissions, post-graduation work permit information, inviting family to Canada, travelling to Canada and required documents). They must be able to independently and thoroughly interpret student needs and provide individualized, student-centered service, as well as create and facilitate outcomes-based group workshops. The Advisors will actively contribute to the continuing development of the advising function.





Key Responsibilities:




Develop a comprehensive scope of knowledge about NAIT programs and services to assist students with navigating NAIT processes, such as application and admission, program transfer, withdrawals, add/drop, self-enrollment, etc. Interpret and apply IRCC policies and procedures to students' unique situations Facilitate holistic, outcome-based advising sessions and workshops with confidence Help students create an action plan through discussion and/or activities related to session outcomes Provide feedback to students regarding their approach to achieving session outcomes Assist students in navigating resources to increase self-agency Actively contribute to the development of advising practices and business processes Collaborate with programs and services at NAIT to facilitate positive student experiences Maintain timely and accurate student records Provide appropriate referrals (internal or external)


Skills & Abilities:




Ability and desire to collaborate and support the advising team Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills Ability to handle a high volume of inquiries in a timely manner with respect, confidence, and tact Theoretical understanding of student-centered learning (preferred) Willingness to learn (required) Familiarity with the PeopleSoft Student Administration system (an asset) Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (required)




Qualifications:




Bachelor's Degree Considerable related experience (three to five years) Post-secondary advising experience is preferred. RISIA certification preferred or must be willing to become RISIA-certified; RCIC certification acceptable


Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).




Remuneration

: $57,314.92 - $76,022.18 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Student Advisor ll).


This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
