Job Description


Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS\xe2\x80\x93related work, Seaspan Shipyards is leading the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

Seaspan Innovation is currently exploring a variety of technology areas from Digital Twins, Green Technologies, and Additive Manufacturing in support of use-cases for future vessels, engineering services, and remote maintenance. Tasks will be varied and tailored to the skills and qualifications of the applicant.

The successful applicant for this internship will work with the Seaspan Innovation team at Vancouver Shipyards and have exposure to the various areas of R&D Innovation, vessel new construction and in-service support at one of the largest shipbuilding companies in Canada.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver, V7P 2R2

What you\'ll do:

  • Engage and Coordinate with Engineering and Program staff to identify and support use-case scenarios for reviews, partner meetings, Integrated Logistics Support and In Service Support
  • Establish workflows for content creation, use case development and demonstration
  • Engage in development and demonstration of selected technologies and applications (e.g. as a case-study or pilot study)
  • Coordinate and schedule activities to procure and manage our technology assets
  • Support teams setting up content and utilization of selected applications and workflows
  • As an innovation intern, you will be working across multiple disciplines and technologies.
What you\'ll bring:
  • Enrolled in a 3rd or 4th year Engineering degree program. Post-graduate students are also encouraged to apply. Students applying should have a strong curiosity about digitization, R&D and Innovation in a heavy manufacturing or marine environment.
  • Candidates that are able to support an 8-month work term are preferred.
  • Proven technical knowledge and engineering skills through exposure to class projects or co-op terms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organization skills
  • Experience working with one or more of the following:
  • 3D Modelling and 3D Printer technologies
  • VR, MR or AR visualization systems
  • Digital twins and simulation environments
  • Decarbonization or noise reduction solutions
  • Operational vessel energy efficiency
  • Excellent digital literacy including Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint
  • Experience with scripting, software development would be an asset.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and manage their time optimally
  • Remain cool while trouble shooting and working through the technology adoption process
