As a GIS Intern in our Guelph/Waterloo office, you will have the opportunity to apply your engineering (civil, geotechnical, environmental, and water resources) academic knowledge to real-world situations while also learning the business skills needed for a successful consulting career.

We are seeking a GIS co-op / intern for approximately 13 to 15 weeks during the winter semester of 2023. This opening is for a 40-hour per week position. It is preferable to have a co-op candidate who could return to the position for up to two additional semester rotations during their undergraduate or graduate studies. Candidates are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Is this the right position to help you achieve your professional goals? Some of the key responsibilities for position include:

  • Producing routine data visualization outputs using ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and/or database scripts (Python, VBA, R, etc.);
  • Collection, manipulation, analysis, designing and developing data visualization outputs using ArcGIS and geospatial data formats, ArcGIS Online;
  • Workflow and metadata documentation, preparation of maps and exhibits using GIS data sets;
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive workflows to automate the compilation of data from multiple sources and serve data to models, maps, reports and other tools;
  • Understanding basic visualization procedures and creating high-quality cartographic products for client deliverables; and
  • Interacting with internal clients to support engineering and environmental projects.
You should expect to work closely with experienced senior scientists/engineers and project managers who will guide and integrate you into Geosyntec s culture. Tasks will be designed to develop knowledge, skills and abilities in these technical disciplines and the business of professional consulting services. You may also be required to perform tasks in other company practice areas as needed.

This position may require OSHA health and safety, first aid, and CPR training and medical monitoring, paid for by the firm.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE
  • Currently registered in a Bachelor s or Master s university degree program in a relevant engineering discipline. (required)
  • Preferred degree focus areas are civil, geotechnical, environmental or water resources engineering.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with ESRI products (ArcGIS Desktop, and ArcGIS Pro), and different web mapping platforms, , (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, ArcGIS Server)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to write complex formulas, creating graphs and analyses, and automate routine processes.
  • Knowledge with database and GIS scripting (Python, VBA, etc.). Outstanding academic credentials and exceptional interpersonal, technical writing, and problem-solving skills. (required)
  • Familiarity with geoprocessing concepts.
  • Valid Canadian driver s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation to drive to project sites. (preferred)
  • Additional skills that would be an asset include: (preferred)
  • Knowledge with database management and GIS for environmental engineering applications, including the ability to write queries, assist with automate routine processes using scripts and generate reports (e.g., Microsoft Access, ArcGIS Geodatabase, SQL Server, ArcGIS).
  • Knowledge with cartography and map design (portfolios are welcome)
