POSITION TITLE: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern LOCATION: Based out of Regina office or Saskatoon office POSITION DETAILS: 16-week summer intern position starting in May 2023, with possibility for extension NOTE: *Position availability pending final funding confirmation* Taking care of our environment has never been more important than it is today. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain. Position Summary
The GIS Intern role will report directly to the Conservation Science/GIS Coordinator and will be responsible for assisting with the delivery of all regional GIS support services through the 2023 field season. The GIS Intern may be required to work directly with other Conservation and Stewardship department team members, as well as partner organizations and volunteers. The role involves technical and operational work and may include fieldwork related to Science and Stewardship activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will support Conservation Science staff with:

  • The management of all new and existing spatial data
  • Producing various map products and spatial datasets
  • Updating the NCC Land Resource Manager (LRM) with new and existing conservation project information
  • Assisting the Regional Conservation, Development, Communications, and Management teams with mapping or other information needs as required
  • Providing the summer Stewardship field staff with GIS and GPS support as needed
  • The acquisition of spatial datasets and mapping products that will assist in NCC Conservation goals
  • Assisting with Stewardship or Engagement related fieldwork as needed

Position Requirements
Experience with ArcGIS desktop software that includes but is not limited to:
  • Managing, maintaining, and populating spatial datasets
  • Producing maps and/or other graphic products and reports
  • Analyzing and editing data using Spatial Editing tools
  • Working knowledge of other common software applications (e.g., Word, Access, Excel)
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Collector considered a strong asset
  • Experience with GIS tools including Field Maps and Survey 123 considered a strong asset
  • Proficiency with Model Builder and/or scripting considered an asset
  • Ability to manage time under deadlines, while delivering quality results
  • Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means
  • Work experience or education in biology, ecology, or conservation considered an asset
  • A strong ability to manage timelines and expectations independently
  • Ability to manage highly confidential material

  • Strong willingness to learn new things

Terms of Employment
  • This is a 16-week position starting in May, with possibility for extension.
  • Salary is $18/hour (based on a 5 day, 37.5 hour work week).
  • This position will report to the Conservation Science and Planning Manager in Saskatchewan.
  • This position is based in Saskatoon or Regina. There may be some opportunities for travel within the province.
  • Work on weekends may be required occasionally.
