The Active Equities (AE) department invests in public and soon-to-be-public companies, leveraging our competitive advantages and sources of edge to exploit alpha opportunities through company specific fundamental research.




The Fundamental Forecasting and Alpha Research teams are jointly recruiting an intern to contribute to data engineering, data science, and machine learning initiatives within Active Equities. Specific projects will be shaped by the candidate's profile and interests and may span both teams, combining fundamental and quantitative investing techniques. The intern will be expected to contribute to feature construction, machine learning pipelines, forecasting, data engineering, portfolio construction, and/or data-intensive research projects.




The Fundamental Forecasting team's objective is to create a diversifying alpha stream by forecasting financial outcomes at scale and systematically monetizing these forecasts. The team develops large-scale, systematic forecasts of individual company fundamentals using alternative data and advanced predictive techniques, and designs portfolios that effectively translate these fundamental insights into investment decisions.




The Alpha Research team conducts empirical research to expand understanding of alpha drivers and market efficiencies, using data driven and ML/AI methods to forecast and exploit them. Their focus is on expanding AE's edge by identifying and developing systematically exploitable sources of alpha.




We are looking for an Intern within Active Equities in Toronto starting in May 2026 for a 8-month internship.

Accountabilities

Work in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with researchers, data engineers, data scientists, software engineers, and investment professionals Contribute to high-impact initiatives, in partnership with subject matter experts from across the Fund, to support research, design, and implementation of investment capabilities Participate in the project life cycle from scoping and analysis to development and testing, and apply best practices and hands-on expertise as required Leverage cutting edge technology and data to enable alpha-generating investment decisions through proprietary research methodologies Bring an alpha generation mindset to contribute towards technical aspects of data & feature engineering, predictions, and portfolio construction

Qualifications

Candidates working towards an advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or another quantitative field would be preferred . At a minimum, prospective candidate s w ill be graduating from an undergraduate or graduate program in A pril 202 7 (or later) and working towards a degree in a STEM or business field. Excellent written and verbal communication skill s. Proficiency in Python would be highly preferred. Experience with Py S park would be a plus. Experience with other programming languages (such as C++/Java, R, VBA) and databases (MySQL, SQL Server, or Oracle) are also welcome. Interest in invest ing and tackling high-impact problems through increased data usage and advanced analytical techniques such as machine learning . E ngineering background with specialization in artificial intelligence, machine learning , data analytics etc . or expertise building and evolving statistical and machine learning models would be considered an asset. Strong critical thinking, analytical and research skills, including experience leading independent research and/or technical projects in a professional or academic setting. Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
