Join a team that has the environment down to a science.Your OpportunityWe are actively seeking a talented Intermediate or Senior Marine Biologist to join our aquatics team in British Columbia. Ideally located in the lower mainland, Vancouver Island or Terrace region, the successful candidate will work in a team environment leading or contributing to environmental impact assessments, environmental effects mitigation and monitoring programs, research projects and permitting (e.g. under the Fisheries Act or Environmental Management Act ). Depending on level of expertise (intermediate or senior level), tasks may include writing and reviewing proposals and reports, planning or conducting field work, preparing and delivering presentations, and business development. The successful candidate will help shape our marine practice in BC and beyond.Your Key ResponsibilitiesLead and/or prepare complex assessment and permitting documents (e.g., Fisheries Act authorization applications, Waste Discharge Authorization applications, Disposal at Sea applications, Environmental Assessment technical chapters)Contribute leadership to the group by providing supervision, training, technical direction, and mentoring to junior and intermediate staffManage, plan, and lead marine field programs (e.g., marine fish, marine mammals, intertidal diversity, water and sediment quality)Assemble, manage, and analyze large marine datasetsManage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budgetLead the pursuit of new business development opportunities by preparing proposals and building and maintaining positive client relationshipsUnderstand recent and existing practices and techniques for sampling and analysis of data from marine intertidal, subtidal and pelagic environmentsEmbrace and promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all workA people leadership position may be available based on interest and qualifications, but is not a requirement for this positionQualificationsYour Capabilities and CredentialsProven technical, communication, writing and organization skillsFamiliarity with coastal marine ecology and knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirementsRequired experience in:

• Working in a collaborative team environment
• Developing field programs and methods to meet specific project objectives
• Preparing Fisheries Act authorization applications with offsetting plans
• Preparing environmental assessment technical chapters federally and provincially, preferably in British Columbia
• Leading field crews in the execution of marine field programs including developing health and safety protocols
• Collecting, managing, and analyzing data (statistical experience is preferred)
• Leading the preparation of complex, high-consequence technical reports, possibly multi-disciplinary
• Leading proposals of varying sizes, contributing to large proposals
• Business development through client relationships and/or technical expertise
• Leading junior and intermediate staff in data management and report preparation

Experience in any of the following is an asset:

• Developing habitat offset and restoration plans
• Designing and conducting underwater acoustic monitoring programs
• Construction monitoring and environmental management planning, including underwater noise
• Occupational Diver Certification (30 m) issued by the Diver Certification Board of Canada (commercial certification)
• Developing field study protocols for and deploying remote operated vehicles
• Coastal resiliency and climate change adaptation

Education and ExperienceBachelors degree in Biology is required and a M.Sc. or PhD in Biology is preferred.Current Registered Professional Biologist accreditation with the College of Applied Biology is required.Minimum of 5 years of experience as a marine biologist, 10 or more years preferred, with experience in marine ecosystems in British Columbia.Consulting experience is required.Other types of safety training are assets: SVOP, MED training, marine first aid.Work EnvironmentStantec British Columbia's standard work week is 37.5 hours. This position is eligible for overtime in the office and field for hours worked in accordance with British Columbia's labour laws. Our typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks including working from Stantec office locations, working from home, or a mix depending on the situation. • Lower Mainland $92,600/BC Other Areas $87,400 - Lower Mainland $138,900/BC Other Areas $131,000 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in BC (Lower Mainland includes Vancouver & Burnaby)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
