The Building Science Division has an immediate opening for a full-time Intermediate Structural Engineer position with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. We are looking for the best and the brightest candidate to fill this role; the reward is a competitive salary (reviewed annually) and benefits package. Paterson's structural engineering work is not your typical career. We perform a wide range of unique structural analyses and design. A list of duties and responsibilities includes:

structural reviews of existing buildings/structures, written condition/evaluation reports, engineering design assignments and management of projects of various scope and complexity, use of a variety of standard engineering methods and techniques to solve problems, office review of structural engineering shop drawings and calculations, field review of structural related construction (e.g. reinforcing steel, shoring), use of design software for structural design, structural design for new residential and commercial properties and custom builds, redesign and structural upgrades for existing buildings undergoing renovation or addressing substandard conditions. structural assessments: adequacy review or due to failure (failure investigations), concrete rehabilitation: parking garages, balconies, other structures, cladding system design/restoration, railing and guard designs, load testing: roof anchors, guards, anchor bolts, uplift resistance, bond strength, design of miscellaneous concrete structures like water tanks, assist in preparing engineering proposals for structural related projects and liaise with clients, assist senior engineer with technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technologists, various other miscellaneous services.
In addition, Paterson engineers are involved in a wide range of Building Envelope Engineering, including condition assessments, performance testing, investigations, report writing, and remedial building envelope design, specifications, site inspections, and contract management.

The ideal candidate for this dynamic and challenging role should have the following qualifications:



Civil/Structural Engineering degree from an accredited institution. Ability to become or already be a licensed and registered Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario with the ability to affix professional seal and signature on documents and drawings. 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in structural design and project execution. Previous working experience within a professional services or consulting environment. Experience with Part 9 analyses and design is required. Experience with concrete rehabilitation and/or building envelope engineering are considered an asset. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with clients and co-workers. Exceptional organizational skills for concurrently managing multiple in-progress projects. Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment. Demonstrates willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities. Readily accept working in a business-competitive environment. Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency with RISA 3D is considered an asset. Valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle is a must. Good oral and written English communication skills. Fluently bilingual in French and English would be considered an asset.

Physical Requirements



Field work may include climbing ladders, performing inspections at higher elevations (including swing stages, with proper training) and exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to occasionally lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
