Title: Intermediate Accountant

Status: Full-time permanent

Location: Provincial Office, Vancouver, BC

Closing date: Open Until Filled

Reporting to the Assistant Controller and accepting direction from the Controller, the Intermediate Accountant is responsible for mid-level accounting such as: financial reporting, analyses, and complex journal entries. The Intermediate Accountant will work closely with all members of the Finance team as part of the month end, quarter end and year end close process as well as special project support such as the annual budget and audits. The Intermediate Accountant may engage with other departments as required to ensure that reports and analysts are prepared and accounted for correctly.

The role of Intermediate Accountant

You are an innovator, ready support the finance team through a period of innovation alongside a material investment in technology and automation.

As part of the Finance team, led by the Chief Financial & Technology Officer, some of your key duties will include:

Teamwork & Initiative:

  • Contributes to a culture of innovation, teamwork, agility and idea generation.
  • Comfortable demonstrating behaviours that support diversity, equity and inclusion and workplace health, safety and wellness within the finance team and on any cross-functional working groups.
  • Models exceptional standards of ethics, professionalism and five star internal and external customer service standards.
  • Embraces data, technology and automation to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the finance function.
  • Actively supports the financial statement and reporting preparation.
  • Actively makes recommendations on changes to or additions in internal controls, finance policies and process documentation.
Accounting:
  • Works with the finance team to ensure timely and accurate annual, quarterly, monthly and ad hoc financial reporting and compliance deliverables.
  • Understands and supports the key performance indicators for the finance function.
  • Performing Gaming account analysis and preparing necessary adjusting entries to correct any variances, and reporting thereon.
  • Performing cost, revenue and profitability analysis for ongoing lottery fundraising events.
  • Assisting with annual budgeting and planning, with guidance from various levels of management and Board of Directors.
  • Processing daily cash-in reports, invoices, journal entries and bank reconciliations for subsidiary(ies), and preparing monthly financial statements for review.
  • Supports mid-level accounting functions such as: complex journal entries, analyses, and reporting.
  • Prepares and reviews internal working papers or analysis to support the annual audit, budget or special projects, as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.

What skills have you developed?
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required, plus a minimum of 3 to 5 years\' experience in accounting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer. Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to the following:
  • Understanding of restricted fund accounting and CRA reporting requirements for non-profits.
  • Foundational understanding of financial risk management and experience identifying, documenting and mitigating financial risks.
  • Ability to research and interpret the CICA Handbook.
  • Comfortable navigating financial software and MS Excel including pivot tables and creating visual dashboards
  • Passion for technology, automation and improving processes within the finance function.
  • Emotionally intelligent and creative thinker with a passion for continuous improvement.
  • Self-starter who enjoys proactively generating, evaluating and implementing new ideas and does independent research and analysis before making recommendations.
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels and from diverse backgrounds in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission and strategic directions of the BC SPCA, to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia.

The BC SPCA compensation structure is based on external benchmarks and regularly reviewed. Starting placement on the range for this position will be commensurate with the successful candidate\'s experience.
