This includes managing a team of three unionized employees.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThis position manages the (C&M) Department to ensure that marketing, communications, branding, and digital services of the Student Union accurately reflect the strategic vision set by the Board of Directors.Brand Management

  • Develops and oversees the execution of the brand voice in collaboration with the C&M team;
  • Develops strategies and plans aimed at increasing the brand awareness and positive recognition of the OTSU in all communications; and
  • Ensures brand standards are met in all publications, materials, and communications.
  • Works with internal stakeholders to ensure brand standards are adhered to and executed properly for all signage and traditional media
Communications
  • Provides leadership to staff that write, edit, and fact-check content for the OTSU and management team including, but not limited to, speeches, speaking notes, internal communications, and external stakeholder outreach;
  • Ensures communications are correct in terms of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and editorial style while maintaining consistent tone and voice;
  • Leads the development of video concepts, scripts, and storyboards; and
  • Monitors, measures, and reports on the effectiveness of communications initiatives and programs; track metrics and look for trends in data to guide the overall Communications strategy.
Digital Communication
  • Oversees online promotion which includes, but is not limited to: creating social media content, monitoring online presence, and engaging with an online audience across a variety of channels (Instagram, Twitter, Discord, LinkedIn, Facebook, Spotify);
  • Manages the ongoing maintenance and updates of content for the OTSU and OTSU E-Sports websites and changes to the websites;
  • Leads the team in using digital media scheduling tools (SproutSocial, MyEmma) and develops social media plans that support organizational goals while advancing the mandate of individual departments; and
  • Manages the development and execution of paid social media ad campaigns that reach targeted audiences as necessary; produce reports on the efficacy and utility of those campaigns.
Partner Relationships and Supervision
  • Responsible for the active development and execution of an annual sponsor & external partnership strategy and promotion plan aimed at securing additional funding opportunities to support a broad range of OTSU events or services including E-Sports, Mental Health Wellness, Menstrual Product Affordability etc.;
  • Approve suppliers' invoices and maintains financial records to be submitted to the Finance Department; and
  • Liaises with vendors, exhibitors, and stakeholders during the process and maintains positive relationships.
  • Conduct annual performance review to staff and probationary feedback to new hires
  • Handle conflict management and issues within the team
Public Relations
  • Leads the OTSU efforts to collect feedback from students and conduct research; and
  • Manages the OTSU public relation and media relation strategies which includes, but is not limited to, building and maintaining media contact lists, creating press releases, emailing students, liaising with University Communications and Marketing and liaising with other OTSU staff.
  • Training current and new staff on basic media relations best practices
Branding and Graphic Design
  • With the support of the OTSU leadership team, this position establishes priorities, project goals and overall design concepts;
  • Leads the development and procurement of all promotional and marketing materials for print, multimedia, web and social media platforms (e.g. logos, posters, brochures, presentations, templates, signage, video animations, digital advertising, web and social media graphics);
  • Manages the execution of brand standards and ensures consistency across all marketing platforms;
  • Responsible for the communication of brand guidelines to staff and third-parties to protect the integrity of the OTSU brand;
  • Ensures accuracy of file preparation, inspects proofs for quality and invoices for print production;
  • Obtains quotes and places orders for promotional materials;
  • Coordinates with printers, contractors and third-party vendors to seek out best options for budget and timeline; and
  • Maintains hardcopy and digital archiving of all design files.
Planning and Collaboration
  • Leads the team in the creation of all related planning and the related creative process for events and projects;
  • Develop and lead of marketing strategies for social media; and
  • Execute promotional events and campaigns.
Web Development
  • Responsible for overseeing the ongoing maintenance and development of the OTSU website, OTSU E-Sports website and any campaign/event specific microsites;
  • Monitors statistics of site usage, campaign analysis, click through performance, etc.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation
  • A Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Design, Public Relations is preferred
  • A post-graduate certificate in a related field is considered an asset.
  • Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and directly related work experience will be considered.
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in communications, marketing, and brand management;
  • Demonstrated experience with social media platforms management;
  • Experience working or managing in a unionized environment is an asset;
  • Experience with digital media content creation, including video and animation;
  • Experience with social media analytics and management software is an asset; and
  • Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in a post-secondary setting is considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Strong technical proficiency working in a Mac environment;
  • Expertise working with Adobe Creative Suite (i.e. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat);
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook);
  • Excellent understanding of digital printing and pre-press production;
  • Familiar with web and mobile design (CSS, HTML5, UI/UX, REACT);
  • Must be a confident communicator and presenter;
  • Strong editing, proofreading, layout and design, professional and creative writing skills are essential;
  • Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills; and
  • Superior project management and time management skills.
WORKING CONDITIONSPhysical EffortDuring events, physical labour will be required in order to carry, assemble, and take-down promotional materials. There is occasional commuting between campuses, to off campus business or community events. For special events, the incumbent might work outdoors or indoors in loud environments.Sensory AttentionWorking on a computer, working with and communicating with students, staff and community members.Mental StressThis position requires attending evening events from time to time and working some weekends. The incumbent must be able to work flexible hours in order to be successful. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
