What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

  • develop, design and construct new and modify existing, specialized laboratory and field-testing equipment for use by the radiation protection laboratory
  • specify, select and monitor contractors repairing and replacing laboratory equipment
  • instruct and train ministry staff on the use and maintenance of equipment and resolve operating problems and deficiencies
  • provide a range of technical services including trouble-shooting and maintenance of equipment
  • provide evaluation and commissioning of new instrumentation


How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Technical expertise:

  • knowledge of the theories, practices and principles of, and experience with, technical equipment, electronics, performance diagnosis, maintenance and repair of a variety of specialized laboratory and field-testing equipment
  • knowledge of radiation monitoring and analytical equipment, familiarity with the intricacies and components of technical equipment and ability to understand technical manuals, handbooks, trade catalogues, IT and demonstrated aptitude and experience visualizing operating requirements based on design


Analytical skills:

  • analytical in order to diagnose and repair laboratory analytical and monitoring equipment
  • evaluation skills to determine whether repairs can be made or equipment should be replaced and the cost effectiveness of both
  • ability to source parts for repair, select and purchase most appropriate parts with regard to needs of the lab and cost


Communication and interpersonal skills:

  • communication and interpersonal skills to provide guidance and consultation on new and repaired equipment to staff, suppliers and contractors installing new equipment


Organizational skills:

  • ability to plan and organize own activities and workload priorities to ensure projects and unexpected matters are carried out within tight timeframes and to expectation
