Job Brief
We are seeking an Instrumentation Engineer to assume a critical role in the engineering and design of hydrogen processing systems / facilities developed by HTEC in British Columbia. The ideal candidate should possess over 8 years of comprehensive experience in the process industry, specializing in hydrogen service (gaseous and liquified), expertise in relevant instrumentation specification / implementation / testing, hazardous location familiarity, field experience in plant operation / maintenance, and large motor applications. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, dedication to precision and detail, and the ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks across various projects are essential for success in this role. Collaboration with project managers, fellow engineers across disciplines, field operations groups, consultants, and sub-trades will be a key aspect of the position.
Responsibilities:
Work as a vital team member in a multi-discipline engineering team (process, mechanical, safety, electrical, etc.) on multiple projects, all at different phases of design
Lead and support the design, specification, configuration, and integration of I&C systems for process control and safety control systems (ESD, F&G)
Select appropriate instruments and valves for process measurement and control and fire/gas detection and alarm system
Prepare instrument procurement packages
Lead implementation of engineering tools/software to facilitate instrumentation design tasks and lifecycle management, such as Smart Plant Instrumentation
Lead creation and development of instrumentation design criteria guidelines and standardize specifications (e.g. instrumentation data sheets, indexes, IO lists, etc.)
Lead field commissioning by guiding instrumentation technicians with startup, operation, and troubleshooting
Support projects through all development phases with technical reviews of EPC/vendor I&C deliverables for compliance, including, but not limited to: Control Narratives, Alarm Setpoints, Cause & Effect, Instrumentation Indexes / Datasheets, I/O Lists, P&IDs, Loop Diagrams, Wiring Schematics, Control System Architecture Drawings (Network / Communications, PLC/DCS/HMI Panels), FAT/SAT plans
Support HTEC Stations and Distribution team as required, including, but not limited to: providing recommendations and improvements to existing instrumentation, local or remote troubleshooting, continuous improvement initiatives
Participate in project meetings between engineering, project management, vendors and EPCs
Active participation in project HAZOP/LOPA workshops
Conduct site visits during facility construction / commissioning and SAT, as well as vendor sites for equipment FAT
Stay informed with latest developments within the hydrogen industry as it pertains to I&C
Foster and maintain a positive culture within Engineering Team and look for continuous improvement and apply lessons learned
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering / Instrumentation and Controls
Minimum 8 years of relevant Instrumentation experience (design, commissioning, startup, operations, maintenance) in an industrial process environment, preferably in Canadian industrial projects (preference will be given to those with experience in hydrogen, oil and gas, but is not mandatory)
Proven ability to successfully design, specify, install, and troubleshoot a variety of process and safety control instrumentation
Extensive working knowledge of calculation / selection for different process measurement devices + control valves
Strong working knowledge of engineering codes, standards and guidelines including, but not limited to: ANSI 5XX, API 5xx, ASME, CEC, CSA 22.x, IEC 61508/61511, ISA 5.x/12.x, NAMUR, NFPA 2, PIP)
Proficiency with programming PLC, DCS, HMI, SCADA systems from Allen-Bradley, ABB, Emerson, Siemens is an asset
Good working experience with industrial network design and implementation using common industrial protocols - both standard and safety (e.g. Modbus, EtherNet/IP, CIP (Safety), PROFINET/PROFISAFE, RS-232/-485, CAN)
Experience designing / specifying instrumentation suitable for hazardous locations (e.g. Class 1 / Zone 2)
Proficiency with engineering software and database programs (Microsoft Office, Smart Plant Instrumentation, AutoCAD, etc.)
Good working knowledge of P&IDs, control wirings, loop diagrams and control system / network architectures
Knowledge of cybersecurity practices and standards (IEC 62443) is an asset
Functional Safety certification in IEC 61511 (TUV/exida) is an asset
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Ability to travel worldwide will be required for on-site commissioning, vendor equipment inspection / testing
Independent self-starter with the ability to multi-task and to quickly adapt to project dynamics in a fast-paced environment
Excellent attention to detail, completeness, and accuracy
Excellent interpersonal communications skills including the ability to build successful relationships, make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences and liaise with peers in industry
