We are currently accepting applications for the position of Instructor, Language Arts for the College\'s School of Foundational Learning (SFL)

Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Instructor delivers foundational literacy, numeracy, essential skills, and high school programming to learners pursuing academic upgrading.

Working in a collaborative team-teaching environment, Instructors in the program are responsible for providing instruction to learners, evaluating learner progress, designing and developing curriculum, and supporting learners in meeting the learning outcomes of their courses and programs. They will facilitate a learning environment that builds confidence with learning, strengthens academic skills, fosters cultural identity, and builds relationship with community.

Areas of responsibility will include:

Provides Quality Instruction In Courses as Assigned

  • Instruct courses as assigned
  • Prepare and update course syllabus/outline and content
  • Create lesson plans and course schedule
  • Develop and update curriculum, manuals and guides as requested by the Associate Dean
  • Evaluate learner performance on an ongoing basis and provide learners and administrators with learner progress reports
  • Develop suitable assessment criteria
  • Maintain officials records as required
Provides a Positive Learning Experience for Students
  • Meet and/or contact students regarding any academic issues (for example: attendance, conduct, performance)
  • Identify areas of concerns and refer to the Associate Dean if follow up is necessary
  • Refer students to other institutional supports as required (for example: Elders, tutoring, counseling)
  • Ensure that any special student accommodations are met (for example: reduced course load, vision impairments, hearing impairments, testing)
  • Support the program in awarding of scholarships and bursaries
  • Participate in college and departmental events that promote student success (for example: orientation, open house, graduation)
Builds and Maintain Relationships with Internal and External Stakeholders and Promote the Department and the College
  • Keep current regarding changes in industry and updates and revises curriculum as required
  • Assist with articulation and transfer activity as required
  • Meet with industry stakeholders and sits on Advisory Committees
  • Attend external community meetings
  • Participate in recruitment events as schedule permits
Other Duties/Special Projects
  • Follow College Policies and procedures
  • Complete any professional development requirements (for example: D2L; Agresso Student Module Training, Instruction Skills Training, FOIP)
  • Ability and willingness to participate in applied research
  • Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • 5-7 years direct literacy-based instructional experience and high school classroom instruction
  • Bachelor of Education
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate (Interim or Permanent)
  • Direct experience working with Indigenous adults in an educational setting.
  • 3-5 years working in an Indigenous community or Indigenous organization
  • General understanding of Essential Skills.
  • Experience working successfully in a team based educational setting.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills required.
  • Strong Indigenous cultural awareness.
  • Instructional experience in a related field or in a post-secondary environment would be considered an asset.
  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Curriculum development
  • Experience working with an online delivery platform (i.e. D2L, Blackboard or Moodle).
  • Highly organized.
  • Instructional portfolio may be adjusted based on operational requirements or specialized qualifications
