The Department of Physics & Atmospheric Science invites applications for a three-year Limited Term Appointment as an Instructor. The Instructor will be a full member of the Department of Physics & Atmospheric Science with the associated rights and responsibilities. Start date for the position is July 1, 2023.

Job description:

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate is to teach a range of undergraduate physics courses. These would include the two introductory physics courses for the life sciences, PHYC 1310 and PHYC 1320. The appointed person would work closely with the instructor who teaches the laboratory component of these courses. The candidate may be required to run the laboratory. They would be responsible for managing the student help centre for first-year students.
The successful applicant would serve as a leader within the Department for teaching pedagogy and curriculum reform. They would also act as the lead in maintaining and expanding the departmental outreach program that engages both the schools and the public within our region. The Instructor would also contribute to the Department, Faculty, and University committees and administration when appropriate.

Applicants are required to have a PhD in physics or a closely related field, or a BSc in physics and a PhD in education, specializing in physics pedagogy. A background in physics education research would be seen as an asset. Candidates must show a commitment to teaching, with a willingness to engage with our students in and outside of the classroom. They must help foster a culture of diversity and inclusion, and aid in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for our students.

3) Teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy and teaching interests, a summary of previous teaching experience, and evaluations received in previously taught courses. The dossier should be no more than 5 pages in length.
4) A statement about how the candidate would address EDIA (equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility) issues in their teaching and outreach.
5) Three confidential letters of reference sent under separate cover by the referees to physics@dal.ca c/o Chair of LTA Search Committee.
