General Purpose
The Department of Chemistry is a central academic unit within the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences and currently consists of 18 faculty members, 15 regular full-time staff, several temporary/contract staff, and over 60 graduate students. We also work with ~6000 undergraduate students each year and provide a wide range of services to support these activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Administrative Officer, the Instructional Support Coordinator will be vital to the day-to-day operation of the department in the delivery of academic services knowledgeably, efficiently, and accurately to faculty, students, and staff. This role will provide direct administrative support through all aspects of an academic cycle -- such as supporting the Deputy Chair in the development of the teaching plan, scheduling exams and courses using the DCU platform, submitting final grades, and coordinating TA support. The incumbent will be involved in all aspects of administering courses offered by the Department of Chemistry, updating and publishing relevant course outlines using Courseleaf SYL and CIM platform, thereby supporting learning for over 50% of the university's undergraduate population.
The Instructional Support Coordinator will be a key resource in the development of the department's Teaching Plan as well as during the hiring process for over 100 TA and 10 sessional lecturer positions annually. The incumbent will be required to have an excellent understanding of HR policies and Collective Agreements, particularly UGFA, CUPE 3913, and USW 4120 Unit A, to provide advice to the Department Chair and Deputy Chair and to prepare required documentation. In consultation with instructors and lab coordinators, the Instructional Support Coordinator will determine TA support needs, pose CUPE positions for TAs and sessional lecturers, collect and sort applications, and participate in relevant hiring committees, providing expert advice regarding hiring procedures and regulations.
The Instructional Support Coordinator is responsible for assisting with the recruitment and hiring of undergraduate research assistants by posting positions on the Experiential Learning Hiring Hub. They also manage the collection, filing, and monitoring of volunteer documentation to ensure all individuals have completed the required health and safety training.
