Job Description

Family Support Coordinator

This is a rare opportunity for the right person. The role of the family support coordinator is positioned to assist 3 family members within the same family, but not living in the same town. Part of the work with be online and some of the time in person, so you have to be up to travelling and do so easily. The family members live in Kingston, South Napanee and Peterborough. This job requires you to be able to travel from Kingston to Napanee to Peterborough part of the time, and the other part, the work can be done remotely.

This is a self-employed contract position, and you would contract directly with the family. You will need to have experience with hiring and overseeing support people. You will require a related post-secondary education regarding assisting people with exceptionalities with planning, organizing themselves within the context of their day, their responsibilities and personal community building.

For each family member, support will look different, and it will only be in getting to know the person and listening well that you will come to understand what good support looks like for each person.

Even with that being so, things you will want to be considering - Assist to ensure 'home' continues to provide a deep sense of personal safety and comfort for each person. Assist in supporting good health care and a positive feeling of well-being. Understand their personal goals and vision of what their ideal life looks like to them and their family, so you can be helpful. Respect family members as self-determining adults; their needs and wants, their strengths and failings, their vulnerabilities and emotions are all an important part of who they are and their path forward. Encourage, assist in finding and offer support to those opportunities to build natural, unpaid relationships. Facilitate opportunities for connecting to typical community places for work, volunteerism, recreation and leisure and other involvements

The main role of the coordinator is to provide the support necessary to assist this family in their support of each family member in organizing the day-to-day and long-term support needs.

To accomplish this goal, you will be asked to attend to the following tasks, but not limited to: Brainstorming, problem solving and assisting with planning as requested. Supporting the implementation of new ideas/plans. The task of finding, hiring, supporting and overseeing new support people and the administrative tasks involved. Providing active and reliable communication to the family. Assisting with applying to and/or responding to government requirements, important paperwork or medical services promptly. Maintain information that is important or necessary to the family in a fashion that gives them full access at all times. Investing the necessary time to develop a rapport with each person being assisted. Many aspects of this role will echo that of a personal assistant to each family member as they organize themselves and build their lives.

A coordinator's tasks are on a continuum of light to more intense/busy in terms of role expectations/tasks, depending on what is happening in that person's life at that time. The work will be in a hybrid model; some of it can be done remotely, and much of it will be done in person. The coordinator will take direction from the family and other external supports that are involved, working for the betterment of each family member's life.

Typically, this will be 10 to 13 hours a week at the rate of $35/hr. We are looking for someone who has flexibility in their week for some daytime or evening availability - understanding that some of the timing will need to be negotiated depending on our collective schedules. A vehicle will be necessary for the work, and mileage is compensated while acting on the family member's behalf, not for travelling to work.

I would like you to respond to my ad with a resume and a cover letter, letting me know some details about your interest in this position. If this goes well, I will require a police check if I were to contract with you.
