Install and service Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and related telematics hardware so fleets get

reliable, actionable data

(GPS, engine/CAN, I/O sensors, cameras). Convert messy real-world signals (12/24V DC,

CAN/J1939

,

RS-232/422/485

) into clean wiring and correct device configuration--

independently in the field

--so the back office sees exactly what it should. Harnessing that survives vibration, wash-downs, winter salt; proper strain relief, abrasion protection, labeling, and documentation.

J1939 reads match OEM SPNs/PIDs

; serial links handshake reliably (CTS/RTS, pinout, termination).
Core Responsibilities

Vehicle Upfitting & Wiring

Install AVL units, I/O hubs, spreader interfaces, cameras/DVRs on

12/24V

systems across trucks, plows, loaders, sweepers, transit, and utility fleets. Connect to

J1939 (CAN)

safely (backbone vs. stub, ?1 m stubs, 120 ? termination, shielded twisted pair) and verify with a CAN interface (Kvaser/PEAK/ValueCAN). Wire and troubleshoot

RS-232/422/485

: straight-through vs. null-modem, 485 termination and bias, shielding/grounding practices.

Commissioning, Verification & Troubleshooting

Perform power tests with

DMM and clamp meter

(quiescent draw, ignition sense, voltage drop). Validate data in the portal/app: GPS lock, cellular signal, I/O state changes, engine data health. Produce clear

as-built documentation

: photos, wiring notes, device IDs/IMEIs, channel mapping.

Independent Field Execution & Customer Interaction

Plan your day's route, confirm site access, and coordinate with customer contacts; adapt to

on-site realities

(weather, missing parts, blocked access). Communicate proactively: arrival windows, change-of-scope notes, constraints, and completion summaries with photos.
Work Conditions & Travel

Environment:

mix of shop and customer sites, indoors/outdoors; early starts/late finishes to align with fleet downtime; winter and summer conditions.

Travel:

periodic overnight travel

for multi-day projects and seasonal rollouts. Company vehicle or mileage reimbursement; per diem + hotel when applicable.

Physical:

lift up to 50 lb occasionally; ladder/roof-rack work; tight under-dash spaces; extended kneeling/overhead tasks.

Independence:

you will often be the

only tech on site

. Expect to plan, execute, verify, and document without day-to-day supervision.
