Industrial Electrician

Primary Function:
The Industrial Electrician is part of the unionized trade personnel for Halifax Gear Repair & Maintenance Local 1825 ILA and will be responsible for implementing the Electrical maintenance program under directions for all PSA Halifax equipment and other Electrical Engineering infrastructure. The position will comply with the forecasted and real-time requirements of Terminal Operations. All work will be done in compliance with the PSA Halifax Safety program. The position will ensure all trade work is done to applicable industry specifications, codes and standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Includes the following, and other duties as may be assigned:
oFollows daily work orders on electrical requirement needs, and ensures repairs are conducted in a safe and timely manner.
oTest faulty equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test equipment or software, and applies knowledge of the functional operation of electronic units and systems.
oStudies blueprints, schematics, manuals, or other specifications to determine installation procedures.
oRepairs or adjusts equipment, machines, or defective components, replacing worn parts, such as gaskets or seals in watertight electrical equipment.
oMaintains equipment logs that record performance problems, repairs, calibrations, or tests.
oInspect components of industrial equipment for accurate assembly and installation or for defects, such as loose connections or frayed wires.
oEnsures the electrical maintenance program is implemented and utilized for all PSA Halifax equipment and/or other Electrical Engineering infrastructure.
oEnsures compliance with the forecasted and real-time requirements of Terminal Operations.
oEnsures hard copy of the work orders and service sheets are submitted to department and maintained on file for reference.
oEnsures ongoing up to date knowledge of electrical codes, specifications and standards and applies knowledge to day-to-day work.
oPerforms annual winterization program for the yard gantries and ship to shore gantries.
oEnsures "good housekeeping" to ensure a safe and clean work environment.
Ensures all OH&S procedures are followed as per company policy and/or safe work procedures.
oMaintains daily communications with the Electrical Superintendent.
oMay work on truck reefers or on the PC simulator ensuring all truck reefer "plugs/unplugs" are completed on a timely and efficient manner.
oLiaises with the operations department on reefer "connects/disconnects" on rail and vessels to meet requirements.
oConducts repairs to the sub-station and reefer sections.
oLiaises with the Maintenance Manager and Mechanical Superintendent if involved in any special projects.
oAssists the Maintenance Manager and Electrical Superintendent in issuing purchase orders for parts and services as required.
oSources any technical information required for any maintenance repairs or upgrades.
oAssists with the completion of the parts inventory twice yearly.
oWorks within the guidelines of the Collective Agreement with local 1825 as necessary.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
oA diploma from a recognizable educational institution for Industrial Electrician is required.
oA Red Seal certification for Industrial Electrician is required; at least 4 years of practical working experience in a heavy equipment industry in Electrical preventative maintenance is an asset.
oEquipment familiarity with STS cranes, RTG's, rolling stock (reach stackers/top loaders and tractor trailers/brutes) and spreaders will be an asset.
oExperience in trouble shooting TMEIC/Siemens 7 PLCs and AC/DC drives, programming, automation and controls is essential for the performance of this role.
oKnowledge and experience in electrical distribution systems and hydraulics are additional desirable assets.
oWork experience in port terminals is considered an asset.
Work Environment:
The work environmental characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:
oWorking in a workshop environment
oStrong likelihood of visiting daily terminals operations, with exposure to mixed weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, wind, rain, sleet, snow.
oWorking in areas where noise is moderate.
oPosition will be required to be accessible on a 24/7 schedule.
oPPE safety vest, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, special conditions safety equipment, and CSA approved work boots while on any terminal area is always required.
Hours of Work:
This position is required to work for the most part from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; but may be on a rotation shift for weekend/nights. The position will be required to be accessible and able to respond to on a 24/7 schedule; Overtime is therefore expected in this position.
oBasic industrial working environment.
oRequirements to work in the field (Yard and Quay) which is the work environment for heavy equipment.
oAbility to work independently once tasks are assigned.
oFlexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays as per the requirements of the Terminal.
oBeing on call 24/7 in the event of emergencies.
oAble to work a rotation schedule
