The opportunity:



The University of Manitoba is looking for an Indigenous Student Recruitment Officer (ISRO). This position will work in conjunction with the existing ISRCR team to represent the University of Manitoba at off-campus and on-campus student recruitment functions, including, but not limited to, presentations given at senior and junior high schools, at evening/weekend parent functions, at community events, at career fairs and symposiums, at education promotional events, and with on-campus events and tours.

The ISRO is charged with delivering an informational and promotional message, through a variety of mediums, designed to facilitate and increase Indigenous student recruitment. The ISRO will work with rural, northern, and urban communities. The ISRO will also assist the Student Recruitment and Admissions offices in supplying information and service to prospective and current applicants as they progress from recruited applicants to registered students. They will work closely and collaboratively with the Indigenous staff and programs on campus, the other Student Recruitment Officers of the Office of the Registrar and Enrolment Services, and the Indigenous Student Recruitment and Community Relations team.

The qualifications and experience we're looking for:



THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES ONLY. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).

Minimum bachelor's degree required, preferably in Communications, Marketing, Education or related field. Recent University of Manitoba graduate preferred. One year of directly-related experience required. Experience with Indigenous communities is required. Experience, knowledge, and competency with Indigenous cultures, history and community protocols required. Knowledge of Indigenous politics as they relate to education and community visits required. Significant public speaking experience and/or ability required. Personal experience as an Indigenous student attending a post-secondary institution in an urban setting is required. (Experience as a student or staff member of the University of Manitoba preferred) Experience working with students or teenagers or in the post-secondary or public school system required. Public relations, communications and/or marketing experience preferred. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others in cooperative ventures. High degree of computer proficiency in Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is required. Must have the ability to quickly establish a strong and personal rapport with Indigenous contacts in the community. Must be able to able to clearly project voice and to hold audiences' attention. Must be able to speak for long periods without tiring or losing enthusiasm. Must be very reliable and self-motivated, and able to work independently without supervision when necessary. Must be a great team player. Must have physical stamina and able to drive or stand for lengthy periods. Must be able to lift heavy boxes (up to 20 kg each) and display units. Ability to conceive, develop, plan, and execute complex projects with limited supervision required. Ability to work and to problem-solve in relatively independent situations required. Must have an innovative and flexible approach to problem-solving. Must be an empathetic and careful listener. Ability to learn quickly and retain new knowledge required. Should have a working knowledge of marketing techniques. Should have a basic understanding of the University of Manitoba degree programs and entrance requirements. Indigenous language preferred. Knowledge of other programs, especially web development programs preferred. Valid driver's license, access to a vehicle, and clean driving record required. Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required. Previous experience in student recruitment positions preferred.
