Under the direct supervision of the HR Manager for Employee & Labour Relations, the Indigenous Relations Advisor provides a wide variety of both complex and routine administrative services. The Indigenous Relations Advisor will help build constructive relationships between Indigenous communities and the group of companies, most specifically aims to improve the relationship between the employer and the Fort McKay community, the members and the members that are employees. The Indigenous Relations Advisor will build and lead the development of cultural competency throughout the organization and to promote cross-cultural understanding throughout the Group of Companies. The Indigenous Relations Advisor will facilitate communication between the Fort McKay Group of Companies and the Fort McKay First Nation HR, Employment and Development groups. This role also includes employee and labour relations that affect Indigenous employees and issues, tracking indigenous demographic analytics and providing reports as the business requires for governance and contractual requirements. This is a full-time salaried position to temporarily replace a maternity leave for approximately 12 months.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Bring together representatives of the Indigenous community, the employing organization and government agencies to promote relationships and alignment in corporate business requirements
  • Promote cross-cultural understanding through the development and implementation of organizational cultural competency and facilitate communication between people of Indigenous origin and non-Indigenous origin
  • Develop, implement and facilitate Indigenous Awareness Training through mechanisms such as Corporate Orientations
  • Work with the organization and Indigenous customers and communities to facilitate consultation processes where required
  • Advise others in the organization regarding Indigenous issues, cultures, trends and demographics
  • Recommend ways to establish and maintain good working relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous employees, supervisors, leaders clients and/or customers
  • Partner within the business to support the HR Strategies to remove barriers to employment for Indigenous people
  • Supporting recruitment processes, identify and implement specific employment programs, support employee and labour relations
  • Work cooperatively with other community agencies to promote and support Indigenous employment and career development
  • Promote the organizations services and policies in the Indigenous community
  • Promote our organization as a potential employer
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to our supervisors and leadership and others within the organization about issues that Indigenous people face with employment
  • Mediate and provide consultation and advice as per employer and union related Indigenous employee issues
  • Identify appropriate resources for use with government agencies, Indigenous clients or customers
  • Promote the integration of Indigenous content in programs and resources such as the FMGOC Fort McKay Internship program
  • Assist in the development and delivery of related programs and support services
  • Provide regular demographic and performance analytics to Executive as required
  • Other related duties as required
Skills, Education and Experience
  • University degree or College Diploma in Human Resources, Business, Organizational Development, or another related field required
  • Equivalent combination of post- secondary education and relative work experience maybe considered
  • Minimum three to five (3-5) years\' experience in the Human Resources field
  • Three - five (3-5) years of experience related HR or employee development with Indigenous groups
  • High proficiency in MS Office is required
  • Excellent communication and human interactions are vital
  • Experience with HCM systems (ie: Dayforce) considered an asset
  • Recruitment and Retention experience is an asset
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
