Position Summary:



The

Indigenous Peer Support (IPS) Worker

participates as a member of the

Integrated Youth Services (IYS) Moncton

team. Drawing on their own lived experience as an Indigenous person accessing mental health or substance use services, the IPS worker helps youth and young adults (e.g., 12 to 25 years), with service navigation and resource information and connects them with IYS and/or community resources. This position assists with the delivery of walk-in services and offers support both on a one-on-one basis and in a group setting. The IPS worker acts as an advocate and role model, helping young people and their families recognize that with hope, recovery is possible. Creating culturally safe and wholistic services is one of the guiding principles of IYS, and the IPS worker is crucial to our success in this area. The IPS worker leads the development and facilitation of Indigenous programs and activities within the hub, with the goal of providing a culturally safe and inclusive environment for Indigenous youth and families living in and around the Greater Moncton area. The IPS worker provides insight and guidance in the hub's ongoing Reconciliation Action Plan and acts as the liaison between the hub and Indigenous communities and service providers in the area.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:



Plays a key role in creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive and youth-friendly environment;

Establishes a purposeful relationship with young people and supports their engagement and participation in programs and services;

Provides support, guidance and mentorship for youth and their families and assists in sharing information on resources and service navigation;

Oversees the development of IYS Moncton's dedicated Indigenous space, and any related programs or activities carried out in this space;

Supports the IYS Moncton site in the implementation and ongoing development of their Reconciliation Action Plan;

Maintains positive relationships with Indigenous communities and other Indigenous-serving organizations;

Participates in or assists with planning recreation and social activities;

Provides support to aid with reducing youth's distress, improve or maintain functioning and enable independence and active participation;

Assists with intake process and maintains a presence in the drop-in area when required;

Facilitates youth engagement and participation in focus groups, workshops, surveys and related activities;

Completes and maintains related records and documentation including statistics, progress reports and care plans;

Participates in team meetings, case conferences and organizational initiatives;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Grade 12 plus related experience working with youth and young adults with mental health and/or substance use issues or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; and Lived experience of mental health, illness, and/or substance use, completion of or eligible for completion of a recognized youth peer support training program and willing to self-identify and share experience of recovery.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Knowledge and understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP);

Must have strong ties to First Nation communities); Ability to establish rapport and maintain therapeutic relationships with young people and family members; Empathic and compassionate, with good listening skills and creative thinking; Demonstrated ability to observe and recognize changes in youth and communicate those changes to others on the care team; Conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills; High degree of self-awareness and capacity to apply appropriate boundaries and maintain confidentiality; Ability to promote positive change and independence; Self-starter with a positive attitude and able to advocate for self and others; Broad knowledge of social, mental health and substance use services available in the community; Knowledge of systemic issues and risk factors facing minority groups including LGBTQ2S+ and Indigenous youth and young adults; Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills, ability to gather and process information to support the organization and its team; Well-developed communication skills, ability to speak, listen and write clearly, thoroughly and professionally; Fluency in English is a requirement. Fluency in French considered a strong asset; Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, accountability, reliability and punctuality; Ability to work independently and show initiative, as well as be part of an interdisciplinary team; and Basic computer skills: experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Working Conditions:



The workweek is 37.5 hours.

Compensation:



Salary range:

$2,077 bi-weekly to $2,231 b-weekly
