The Indigenous Health Coordinator (IHC) reports to the Manager, Indigenous Health & Diversity North Zone. The IC contributes to providing holistic healthcare to Indigenous people, families, communities that fosters culturally acceptable approaches, promotes respectful relationships with pertinent stakeholders, facilitates Indigenous client (population, patient and families)-centred care and builds understanding and trust between Indigenous people and health care providers, While recognizing the historical impacts of colonization, the beauty of traditional Indigenous beliefs and cultures, the diversity of many beliefs among Indigenous peoples, and the complex western medical approaches to health; the IC establishes responsive, culturally sensitive and consultative relationships that enable trust and healing among peoples of very diverse world views and approaches to health and healing. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Northern Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $6,300. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.

The IC plays a pivotal role in care for Indigenous people across health service continuum, including providing and/or facilitating spiritual & cultural support, emotional, physical & mental wellness & education to diverse Indigenous people seeking health care services, The Indigenous Health Coordinator (IC) is responsible and accountable for: Advocating and supporting Indigenous clients and families across the continuum of care-within health care facilities and within the community setting; Promoting awareness of and assisting Indigenous clients, families, agencies, and communities in accessing AHS programs and services; Promoting awareness and assisting in linking Indigenous clients, families, and communities to non-AHS programs i.e., FCSS, Children’s Services, local social service agencies; Participating in the provision of health promotion and disease/injury prevention programs through partnerships which focus on self- reliance and self-determination; Assisting AH staff and physicians in obtaining information to better understand the client and family health concerns, social support network, and barriers to access to health care: Providing consultation and assistance to the health care team regarding culturally appropriate service provision; Participating in the provision of cultural awareness education for AH staff; Developing culturally appropriate educational programs and materials for Indigenous clients, families, and communities; Facilitating the development of respectful working partnerships between Alberta Health Services [AHS] programs & services and Indigenous communities, organizations, and agencies; Facilitating educational opportunities for Indigenous secondary and post-secondary students to work with AH staff to learn more about Indigenous culture and the health care culture and thereby encouraging these students to enter the AHS workforce.

Required Qualifications: As a bona fide occupational requirement, and under Section 11 of the Alberta Human Rights Act, only indigenous applicants will be considered. We encourage Indigenous candidates to self- identify. Grade 12 Diploma minimum. College certificate/diploma in related health care discipline, such as Community Health Representative, Social Work, and Nursing preferred (If part of a registered profession-registration in good standing with applicable governing body). High degree of cultural competence as it relates to working with Indigenous people.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of local Indigenous history and experience in local Indigenous culture. Ability to travel across Alberta; occasionally in remote areas with no public transport. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external partners in a respectful and collaborative manner. Broad knowledge of Indigenous history and cultures within Alberta. Critical thinking in order to execute and develop innovative and culturally appropriate approaches to attracting Indigenous people to AS. Proven ability to foster partnerships, establish and maintain strong working relationships with First Nations and Metis communities, public agencies and government. Understand the politically sensitive nature of working with multiple culturally diverse individuals and groups.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to speak or understand any of the Indigenous languages spoken within the territories of Treaty 6, Treaty 7, Treaty 8 or the Metis Settlements of Alberta. Broad knowledge of Diversity and Inclusion concepts.
