Indigenous Family Support Worker - Babies' Best Start & Futures
REPORTING TO:

POSITION SUMMARY:
Babies' Best Start and Futures are federally and provincially funded programs. Babies' Best Start is a prenatal nutrition program offered to pregnant women and families with babies less than one year of age focusing on learning about breastfeeding, infant nutrition, common baby concerns and providing psycho education and support for mothers and families. Futures program supports youth and adults parenting children less than 6 years of age and youth at risk of becoming pregnant.
Under the direction and supervision of the Futures Coordinator, the Family Support Worker assumes responsibility for the planning, implementation and development of program activities
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or experience in early childhood, counseling would be an asset (Combinations may be considered)
Previous experience working with youth, children and families.
Experience with mentoring and education to support Indigenous teachings, culture, history and ceremony, especially as it relates to parenting.
Experience in providing services to Indigenous children and their families.
Ability to develop, organize and implement programs.
Ability to work with limited supervision
Good interpersonal, communication (verbal & written) and public relations skills
Group facilitation skills.
Creative approach to problem solving.
Open minded and non-judgmental team approach.
General computer knowledge.
Excellent physical and emotional health
Valid driver's license and abstract as well as a vehicle available for work.
Emergency First Aid and CPR Certification
Satisfactory Criminal Record and clear Child Abuse Registry with an acceptable Prior Contact Check
A. Program & Service Delivery
Provide nutrition teaching, breastfeeding support, and general pre-natal support as indicated to program participants at hospital, at home, or at the centre
Provide individual and group delivery of programs designed to support healthy parenting and families with young children
Provide early education programming
Complete training across a variety of programs offered (eg. parenting program) and cross training to support the program offering full services
Develop children's activities & provide child minding
Implementing programming within a school setting
Act as a liaison and/or advocate for participants when dealing with agencies or organizations.
Obtain and develop resource material for participants as required.
Organize displays and resources, complete housekeeping duties and shopping duties as requested.
Maintain required statistical files, program files and records.
Recognize and act on cultural needs of the participant when required.
Develop trusting relationships with participants.
B. Indigenous Cultural Program Delivery
The Indigenous Family Support Worker is responsible for the development and implementation of a Culture Program for children and families in the Futures/Babies Best program
Ensure the Cultural Program activities are congruent with the values and standards of Marymound; participate in meetings with the Cultural team in Winnipeg
Initiate, direct and/or co-ordinate cultural services and ceremonies as appropriate for all clients;
Be available to Marymound staff for consultation and guidance regarding questions related to Indigenous traditions and ceremonies whether it is about a client or themselves

Promote project positively.
Participate in reflective supervision with the Program Coordinator and team meetings.
Form partnerships with other agencies to permit the comprehensive and integrated delivery of services.
Accumulate resources required to ensure that all aspects of program delivery are achieved.
Attend all training seminars, workshops as determined by the Program Coordinator in collaboration with personal development plans.
Always maintain a high level of professionalism and integrity.
Perform other duties as required by the position.
