The Indigenous Consultation Forester works within the Indigenous Relations Unit of the Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures, Forestry and Peatlands Branch.


Conditions of Employment:


Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Must possess a Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License Working outdoors and in remote locations is required on occasion Potential exposure to substances with a strong odour (e.g. smudging sage, sweetgrass) Requires occasional overnight travel, including to remote locations, using various modes of transportation such as chartered aircraft, boats, and trucks Ability to work overtime, including evenings and weekends, as required

Qualifications:


Essential:


Post-secondary education in the Social Sciences such as: Indigenous Relations or Community Economic Development, or Physical Sciences, such as Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Forestry, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related discipline. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple complex projects concurrently. Experience working with Indigenous communities in a legal and natural resource context, including a thorough understanding of Aboriginal law and Manitoba's Consultation Framework & Policy. Ability to liaise with multi-stakeholder groups to achieve consultation objectives. Strong written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex information to a variety of audiences. Strong verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain positive working relationships with diverse staff and stakeholders.



Desired:
Experience with forestry and peatlands management, development, and planning. Experience performing specialized consultation work utilizing a high degree of independence and judgment.

Duties:


The Indigenous Consultation Forester is responsible for assisting with developing and administering legally required Crown-Indigenous consultation projects for forestry and peatlands plans/activities, and providing support to various Indigenous engagement initiatives (e.g. capacity building, economic development). The role serves as a liaison to Indigenous communities, proponents, and other government branches/departments to provide guidance on Indigenous-related matters. The role brings education and experience in forestry or natural resources and Indigenous relations with specialized expertise to support education and training, relationship building, and collaboration amongst parties.
