Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto's subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

The Indigenous Relations Team is responsible for establishing, building and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities, Nations and organizations, as well as providing advice to Metrolinx business units in support of the delivery of capital projects and operations.

What will I be doing?

  • Reporting to the Senior Manager and working as a team player with colleagues on the Indigenous Relations Team (IRT), the Indigenous Community Relations Specialist fosters positive working relationships with Indigenous Peoples, Nations and organizations; and supports Sr Manger and Sr Advisors, as needed in managing emerging issues, risks and opportunities.
  • Sits on internal and external committees/participates as partner with Indigenous organizations.
  • Generally, supports communication and engagement efforts with Indigenous communities, Nations and organizations.
  • Works collaboratively with Metrolinx business units on initiatives and emerging issues; provides subject matter expertise and advice to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Has a firm understanding of the broad social, legal, and political issues related to Indigenous Peoples, including multi-jurisdictional issues, relationships, land/treaty negotiations, environmental processes, and matters of economic development.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Completion of diploma in Indigenous Studies/Relations, Community Engagement, Communications, Political Science, Public Relations or related field - or a combination of education, training and experience, including lived experience, deemed equivalent.
  • Proven experience in proofreading and editing, with a strong portfolio showcasing your attention to detail and ability to enhance visual and written communication.
  • Strong writing skills, with a track record of crafting clear, concise, and impactful letters and presentations demonstrating strong writing skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt writing style to suit different audiences and purposes, obtained through working in a corporate or professional setting.
  • Work closely with subject matter experts to understand complex concepts and translate them into clear, accessible language for a diverse audience.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous relations is considered an asset.
  • Have a valid Ontario Class G driver's license and must meet corporate standard for a good driving record. Valid driver license must be maintained during the employment relationship and is a condition of employment.
  • Complete proficiency in the English language to facilitate high profile public communications.
  • Knowledge of issues management and modern communication techniques and software applications (e.g. desktop publishing, web-authoring).
  • Organizational, research, planning, project management, diplomacy and oral/written communication skills.
  • Experience with data management.
