The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, as well as one of the world's leading research centres in the area of addiction and mental health. CAMH combines clinical care, research, education, policy development and health promotion to transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions. As Canada's leading mental illness research facility, CAMH's Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute (CFMHRI) is home to scientists, staff and research trainees conducting leading research to improve the understanding of the brain and the causes, the biomarkers and cures for mental illness as well as research to advance the prevention and treatment for mental illness and addictions across the lifespan. CFMHRI is home to one of the few brain imaging centres in the world fully dedicated to research on mental illness. The CAMH Brain Health Imaging Centre (BHIC) leads the way globally in giving scientists the ability to see new paths in the brain chemistry structure, function and behaviour in mental illness.

The BHIC is currently seeking a full-time Independent Scientist - MRI Unit Head to provide leadership in the application of structural and functional MRI techniques to human brain research in psychiatry and other brain disorders. Reporting to the Director, BHIC, you will provide advanced methodological supports to the MRI scientific user community. A major component of this position will be working with the physicist to ensure quality assurance for the MRI scanner, including the interpretation of daily quality control data. The incumbent will work in a collaborative inter-disciplinary environment that spans fundamental and clinical research and support a workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. The successful candidate will be required to establish local, national, and international collaborations, provide practical supervision of undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral trainees, and technical staff working with MR Technology and research methods. As a Scientist, the successful candidate will be expected to lead research activities, maintain an active publication record, and secure extramural funding sources for those activities. They will also disseminate research results through presentations at academic meetings and conferences and communicate ideas to key decision makers. Participation in leadership advisory groups at CAMH and externally is expected. CAMH is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and the successful applicant will need to obtain academic affiliation with a university department as a faculty member. This position is located at 250 College Street, Toronto, Ontario.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant is required to have a Ph.D. in and/or M.D. Health Sciences and prior experience in MR imaging as evidenced by conference proceedings and peer-reviewed publications. Experience in the field of neuroradiology, including knowledge regarding incidental findings is a significant asset. Your experience will include 5-10 years of experience training and working in MRI research and interdisciplinary collaborative research within an academic hospital environment. You will have expertise in identifying optimal pulse sequences for specific scientific questions; the development of new methodology to integrate data between different brain imaging methods; and, post-acquisition processing approaches to advance the understanding of brain disorders. The successful candidate will have a record of accomplishment that demonstrates competence in obtaining grants, publishing in peer reviewed journals, disseminating research and participation in the education and mentoring of students and trainees. You will have demonstrated proficiency in the programming of MR pulse sequences or image reconstruction algorithms and demonstrated expertise in MR physics, familiarity with the LINUX and Microsoft Windows operating systems and the ability to write basic processing scripts in programming language and simulation tools such as Matlab, IDL, R, Python, Mathematica and/or Octave. You will also understand and have implemented reliable processing protocols, and have experience in the sharing and management of data, and generating reproducible code. The successful candidate will also possess sound judgment, excellent organizational, communication (verbal/written) and strong analytical skills. The demonstrated ability to cultivate internal and external relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers and the scientific community is required. You must be able to lead and work effectively within an interdisciplinary team and interact comfortably with diverse community partners. The capacity to work with individuals of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required. Bilingualism (English/French) and/or proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
