PURPOSE



Reporting to the Manager, Wellness Camp Operations and Maintenance, the Ice Road Maintainer is responsible for operating heavy and light equipment to construct, inspect, and maintain seasonal ice and winter roads, including associated access routes. The position ensures the safe and reliable movement of vehicles, goods, and personnel across frozen waterways and snow-covered terrain in compliance with GNWT and territorial safety and maintenance standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES



Monitor the ice road network, including frozen water bodies, natural terrain, rights-of-way, and snow-covered sections; inspect ice thickness, load capacity, surface conditions, markings, and signage, and take corrective action as required. Operate heavy equipment (e.g., graders, plow trucks, loaders, snow-cats, water trucks) and light vehicles to construct, maintain, grade, compact, and clear ice/winter roads; remove snow, slush, frost heaves, and surface irregularities. Apply traction, anti-icing, and de-icing materials (e.g., sand, aggregate, geotextile mats, or water spray) to improve load capacity and surface safety. Maintain drainage, culverts, snowbanks, berms, ice bridges, and access routes to prevent thawing, instability, or hazards. Assist with the construction of the ice road season, including marking lanes, setting signage, and implementing speed restrictions, and participate in decommissioning at season's end. Conduct equipment inspections, daily pre-start checklists, minor servicing, and defect reporting; assist mechanics or leads with major repairs. Maintain accurate logs and records of ice thickness, load limits, maintenance activities, equipment usage, and materials. Ensure compliance with GNWT Occupational Health and Safety standards, environmental policies, and winter road regulations. Work collaboratively with other crews, remote site personnel, logistics staff, and flagging operations; respond to emergency events such as ice cracking, thaw transitions, or vehicle incidents. Contribute to planning and scheduling of winter road operations, prioritize work in remote and harsh conditions, and make operational decisions with limited supervision. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS



Minimum Grade 10 education or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 1-2 years of experience operating heavy equipment and performing winter road, ice road, or highway maintenance is an asset. Valid Class 3 Driver's License with air brake endorsement (or equivalent). Knowledge of winter road construction and maintenance methods, including ice thickness measurement, snow clearing, compacting, load-bearing surfaces, and frost/thaw behavior. Proficient in operating heavy trucks and equipment such as graders, loaders, plow trucks, snow-cats, and water trucks in winter terrain. Ability to inspect and detect defects, cracks, or weak zones in ice roads and implement preventive measures. WHMIS and First Aid/CPR certifications, or willingness to obtain. Restricted Radio Operator's License is an asset. Physically fit and able to work in remote northern environments and stay overnight as require
