Job Description


Overview:This position is located in Yellowknife, NT.Under the direction of the Director of the Hydro Division, is responsible for providing electrical technical expertise and field engineering specialist support services for the operations and maintenance of power systems and all electrical assets for NTPC\xe2\x80\x99s Hydro Zone power generation, substations, system operations (Jackfish Control Centre), and other systems. Scope includes all communities, building, plants and facilities in NTPC\xe2\x80\x99s Hydro Zone including the North and South Slave and both hydro and thermal technologies. Also supports solar, wind and other renewable generation technologies as required. Acts as Hydro Operations\xe2\x80\x99 conduit to facilitate best business practices in coordination and cooperation with Asset Management, Project Management, Engineering, T&D and IT (SCADA & Automation Operations).Together with operating staff performs hydro system and thermal plant restoration as appropriate, makes emergency field repairs, troubleshoots, resolves complex electrical issues, investigates outages and produces reports, completes CMMS work orders and makes corrective recommendations through CMMS.As a hydro electrical field specialist lead, you support Asset Management, Engineering and Project Management with identification, definition, design and implementation of capital projects. Occasionally prepares or supports the development of project recognition forms. Performs or supports asset condition and risk assessments and inspections and produces reports. Supports capital projects by providing hydro electrical field specialist support services and technical expertise during capital project implementation. May be assigned as the project manager or project monitor for capital projects. Responsibilities:

  • Provides high level technical expertise and electrical field specialist support services for hydro and thermal assets including rotating equipment used for power generation including hydroelectric units and diesel and fuelled engine-generator sets (gensets), related electrical equipment (generators, transformers, HV cables, digital governors, digital exciters, unit & genset protection and controls) and all other electrical equipment. Together with operating staff performs hydro and thermal plant restoration as appropriate, makes emergency field repairs, troubleshoots, resolves complex electrical issues, investigates outages and produces reports, completes CMMS work orders and makes corrective recommendations through CMMS. Supports SCADA and Automation Operations with SCADA and Automation restoration, emergency field repairs and troubleshooting. Manages Outage Investigation and Reporting Process for the Division.
  • In consultation and coordination with SCADA and Automation Operations group, maintains, and troubleshoots SCADA plant level equipment including Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).
  • Experience with relay protection and controls including commissioning of new equipment and trouble shooting protection problems.
  • Supports Asset Management, Engineering and Project Management with identification, definition, design and implementation of capital projects. Occasionally prepares project briefs. Performs or supports asset condition and risk assessments and inspections and produces reports. Supports capital projects by providing technical electrical field engineering specialist support services and technical expertise or performing commissioning or other duties during capital project implementation.
  • Manages assigned capital projects and studies , including coordination with the division asset manager to set the scope of the project, issuing, and awarding of quotes, tenders, and request for proposals for services and supplies for the capital projects, management of the construction or procurement of the assets and coordination with the asset manager and the Finance division on the required administration work to close out the capital project in accordance with corporate policies and procedures.
  • Updates CMMS asset data, marks up or red-lines prints of technical drawings to produce \xe2\x80\x9cas-built drawings\xe2\x80\x9d, and sends them to Engineering to update CAD drawings managed on central drawing management system to reflect changes resulting from maintenance work.
  • Acts in a pro-active manner and makes timely recommendations on continuous improvements of NTPC operations and equipment.
  • Provides assistance to operational, maintenance, SCADA and system control staff, and contractors, and provides guidance on all power system duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma from a recognized college or technical institute, plus at least eight (8) years of related technologist engineering experience, including a minimum of five (5) years providing technical support for operational and maintenance work in a utility environment. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Must have technical knowledge pertaining to the design, operation, maintenance of electrical apparatus and power systems.
  • Must have working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Office products.
  • Asset to have thorough knowledge of reliability theory and practice of electrical power systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare technical reports, including business case analyses.
  • Eligible for membership of ASET (Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta).
  • Must have demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimum direct supervision.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize manufactures Manuals and Parts Books.
  • Must have a high level of oral and written communication skills in English to maintain effective communications with team members, and to prepare documentation and reports.
  • Good analytical skills and the ability to diagnose electrical power system problems and propose solutions.
  • Good working knowledge of safety electrical regulations and procedures.
  • Computer skills to operate a variety of software related to financial, administrative and reporting systems, electronic mail, internet, etc.
  • Must have a NWT Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license (or equivalent).
  • Must undergo a successful criminal background check.
Salary for this position ranges from $52.18/hr. - $63.40/hr. plus a location allowance of approximately $4,642 per year.
