Within Newfoundland and Labrador we have an open-pit mine and concentrator in Voisey's Bay - Vale's only fly-in/fly-out operation in Canada - produces nickel-cobalt-copper concentrate and copper concentrate. An underground expansion will see a transition to a leading edge underground mine extending the life of the mine. Additionally, our state-of the-art facility in Long Harbour is the first nickel processing plant in the world to use hydrometallurgy technology to produce Plating RoundsTM from hard rock (sulphide) concentrate, with low carbon footprint compared to traditional smelter technology. Both locations have won awards for our focus on safety and the environment. Finally, our office in St. John's supports the Newfoundland and Labrador Operations.

Our Team

Our Vale Newfoundland & Labrador (VNL) Human Resources Team supports our operations across St. John's, Voisey's Bay, and Long Harbour. Our operations in Newfoundland and Labrador are inclusive of our underground and surface mining operations in Voisey's Bay and our processing plant in Long Harbour. Our HR Team is staffed by human resources and analytical professionals in each location.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Human Resources Manager to join our Vale Newfoundland & Labrador (VNL) Leadership Team. This is a permanent position based at a home office with travel to both the Long Harbour and Voisey's Bay Operations as needed.

Partnering with senior management across multiple functional areas, the Human Resources (HR) Manager will drive business results by providing business focused HR functional leadership with emphasis on aligning human resources initiatives with business strategies & objectives and promoting a high-performance environment while putting 'people at the center'. Leading and coaching a Human Resources Business Partner team to successfully support current and future business strategies while mitigating operational HR related risks while fostering HR relationships.

The HR Manager will also work closely with the leadership team at the VNL Operations which includes both the Long Harbour Processing Plant and Voisey's Bay, including the Underground Project. This role also interfaces with other members of the HR Management Team across the North Atlantic and Global operations to allow for alignment and improvements within the HR function across all sites.

In this position, you will

  • Provide strategy and direction in the following areas: Workforce Planning; Labour and Union Relations; Culture; Career and Succession Planning; Organizational Design; HR Planning; Performance Management; and Employee Engagement. The HR Manager must also influence the development and advancement of plans and programs in the areas of Compensation Administration; Pension Administration; Disability Management and Drug & Alcohol Program Administration, and Health & Medical Plan Administration;
  • Accountable for leading and managing a team of human resources professionals within VNL Operations in a manner that aligns with local and corporate strategic business objectives, collective agreements and encourages continuous improvement of processes and people;
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, which includes business leaders, academics, community leaders and industry contacts;
  • Contribute towards key stakeholder relations with Nunatsiavut Government and Innu Nation and the implementation of the Impacts & Benefits Agreements;
  • Analyze corporate programs and processes and make suggestions for improvements to regional programs, policies, practices, and systems and implement accordingly;
  • Establish the HR Plan for the department to align with and contribute to the Operations Execution Plan, the HR Departmental Strategic Plan, as well as the overall Vale NL Strategic Plan;
  • Develop and execute the Human Resources Strategy for the effective transition from project to operations at Voisey's Bay;
  • Development of the emplolyee relations strategy for the Vale NL Operations;
  • Identify and analyze trends impacting local policies and programs and provide recommendations to address potential impacts (i.e. attraction and retention strategies);
  • Ensure that all Human Resources related obligations and commitments as per the Women's Employment Plan and Development Agreement with the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador are met;
  • Development and the administration of the HR budget for VNL Operations;
  • Maintain current HR policies & procedures, as well as, other relevant statistics and report out to key stakeholders as reqiured.
About You
  • An Undergraduate Degree in business/commerce with 8-10 years of proven experience in a similar role. A combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
  • CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) is considered an asset.
  • Experience in all HR functions (including employee/labour relations and contract negotiations).
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Business acumen - understanding of financial and strategic aspects of the business unit.
  • Knowledge of related provincial and federal legislation.
