Operating for over 70 years, they specialize in purchasing, grading, handling and processing ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals received from manufacturers, demolition contractors, smaller recycling yards and individuals and utilize the Halifax Harbour, as the second largest ice-free harbour on the main European/North America Atlantic shipping lanes, to efficiently ship their metals all over the world. Nominated for International Business of the Year at the 2015 Halifax Business Awards, John Ross & Sons Ltd. has maintained business relationships worldwide from China to Pakistan, India, Europe and the United States - with 80% of their sales departing from Halifax container facilities, making them one of the largest exporters out of the Port of Halifax. Through the changing international marketplace, they have identified both the need and opportunity to expand business outside traditional borders. Their approach to expansion has included numerous forays to visit major buyers in these markets and the establishment of direct links with buyers and agents in these countries.Who you areThis presents a great opportunity for someone to wrap their arms around designing both the HR function and the HR team for a company that is invested in moving the organization forward and focused on creating a great place to work as the next generation takes the reigns on running the business. We have recently undertaken a process to gain deeper insight into our culture and the lived experience of our people, and you will play a key role in executing many of the recommendations that will come out of this process.The HR Manager will champion efforts to attract, develop, and retain the best employees as well as focus on building our future capabilities. Leading the implementation and management of programs and strategies that aim to attract, measure, develop and manage our people while ensuring strategies are effective and aligned with organizational goals that help to build a culture that people are attracted to and want to stay in will be a top priority for the successful candidate.They will work closely with the organization's leaders to create strategic solutions for implementing improvement opportunities across the organization while working to actively support them to be more effective. While your primary area of responsibility will be based in our Bayers Lake headquarters, you will also provide coaching and guidance to our satellite locations across Atlantic Canada as required.Responsibilities: Leadership and strategy development

  • Design and implement an HR function and structure, including determining required supporting resources to effectively support the business and its people.
  • Developing the capability of the HR team as a whole and providing sound and engaging leadership, including overall responsibility for resources in Payroll, Health and Safety, and Administration.
  • Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives, both short and long-term, aligned with the overall business strategy.
  • Support current and future business needs through our people's development, engagement and motivation.
  • Assists in establishing, administering and communicating sound policies and practices and ensures compliance with applicable HR laws, policies and regulations while leveraging leading practices to minimize risk exposures.
  • Develops and oversees an approach to team/office activities and events, including team building as required.
  • Provides regular, ongoing coaching to managers/supervisors and employees as required.
Recruitment, Hiring and Orientation
  • Manages the recruitment, selection and onboarding/orientation process, whether led internally or externally with third-party partners.
  • Collaborates with the management team to discuss issues, needs and requirements related to recruitment and staffing.
  • Oversees the execution of the organization's temporary foreign worker program, including ensuring timely and accurate reporting and record-keeping, while adhering to the related regulatory requirements Compensation and Benefits.
  • Assists in developing and implementing total rewards frameworks across the organization by understanding leading practices and market trends.
  • Develops, implements, and manages a company's reward, recognition, and incentive programs.
Payroll and Attendance Management
  • Provide oversight and direction to the payroll function.
  • support and guidance to the payroll administrator on inquiries related to HR policies and procedures, employee changes and related compensation decisions.
  • Assists in the development of strategies to address and manage attendance management and supports managers and supervisors in addressing attendance concerns.
Performance Management
  • Oversees the implementation and execution of performance management and goal-setting systems that drive high performance.
  • Supports managers and supervisors in effectively addressing performance concerns.
  • Bridges management and employee relations by addressing employee concerns, grievances, or other concerns.
  • Maintains the work structure by ensuring all job requirements and job descriptions are updated during the performance management process and kept on file.
Health and Safety
  • Provides oversight and direction to the Health and Safety officer to understand the state of the organization's safety culture while ensuring the overall health and safety of employees and visitors.
  • Liaisons with workers' compensation boards regarding claims and case management, return to work programs, and transitional working requirements.
As an ideal candidate, you have:
  • Degree (or diploma) in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources Management (or related field of study) from a recognized educational institute.
  • CHRP designation is considered an asset.
  • 5+ years experience in a related/comparable Human Resources role with managerial responsibilities.
  • High level of professionalism and comfort working in a degree of ambiguity.
  • Ability to de-escalate work-related situations.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, mentor and empower employees to perform at their highest capacity.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel and Outlook.)
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, inquisitive and driven to learn new skills.
