The HR Generalist plays a vital role in supporting the Shuswap Band by managing a wide range of human resources functions, with a strong focus on cultivating a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace. This includes overseeing the full employee life cycle--from recruitment and onboarding to offboarding--while ensuring that Health and Safety principles are embedded into every stage of the employee experience. The HR Generalist collaborates across departments to align HR practices with organizational goals, supports strategic initiatives, and contributes to continuous improvement in workplace safety, compliance, and culture. With a comprehensive understanding of HR and Health and Safety standards, excellent communication skills, and a proactive mindset, this role is key to sustaining a respectful and resilient work environment.
Responsibilities
Recruitment and Selection: Partner with departments to support job creation, role evolution, and recruitment strategies. Ensure Health and Safety considerations are reflected in job design and candidate evaluation.
Onboarding and Orientation: Develop and deliver onboarding programs that include mandatory Health and Safety training, workplace hazard awareness, and emergency procedures. Ensure documentation is complete and compliant with HR and payroll policies.
Policy Development: Collaborate with senior leadership to review and enhance HR policies and procedures, with a focus on safety, wellness, and regulatory compliance.
Onboarding Process Redesign: Lead the redesign and implementation of onboarding processes that prioritize psychological safety, cultural awareness, and physical well-being.
Management: Work closely with Directors and Managers in developing job descriptions
Benefits Evaluation: Support the HR Director in evaluating benefit programs that promote employee health, mental wellness, and preventative care.
HRIS Coordination: Maintain and optimize the HRIS system - ADP Workforce now to track training, certifications, incident reports, and compliance metrics related to Health and Safety.
Health and Safety Program Support: Actively contribute to the development, delivery, and monitoring of Health and Safety programs. Coordinate training sessions, maintain records, and ensure compliance with provincial regulations.
Other Duties: Perform additional HR-related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience as a Human Resources Generalist
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
Experience working with an Indigenous community is highly valued.
Proficiency with applicant tracking systems and HRIS- ADP Workforce now platforms.
Strong knowledge of federal/provincial legislation, including employment standards, labour relations, human rights, and occupational health and safety regulations.
Familiarity with Project Management principles; certification is an asset.
Proven ability to work independently in a dynamic, multi-departmental environment.
Expertise in full-cycle recruitment, payroll, benefits, and employment law.
Passion for creating recognition programs that celebrate safe practices and team achievements.
