Position Summary
The Human Resources Coordinator plays a central role in supporting the people, culture, and systems of the Woodland Cree First Nation Education Authority. Reporting to the Director of Education, this position coordinates core HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, policy implementation, payroll coordination, and HR systems administration. This role is well-suited to a values-driven HR professional who understands the unique realities of First Nations education systems, works with care and discretion, and can balance regulatory compliance with relational and culturally grounded approaches.
Key Responsibilities
1. Human Resources Operations Coordinate full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding for teaching, support, and administrative staff Maintain accurate employee records, contracts, and personnel files in compliance with FOIP and employment legislation Administer employee leave, attendance, and benefits enrollment and tracking Support performance management processes including probation, evaluations, and professional growth plans Assist leadership with employee relations matters using restorative, culturally respectful practices
2. Payroll & HR Systems Coordination Act as the primary administrator for HR and payroll systems (e.g., Sage HR & Payroll) Coordinate payroll processing in collaboration with finance, ensuring accuracy and legislative compliance Support implementation and administration of timekeeping tools, including geofencing Reconcile payroll and HR data and support audits or reporting requirements
3. Policy, Compliance & Governance Support Implement HR policies, administrative procedures, and staff handbooks approved by the Board of Education Support compliance with: Alberta Employment Standards Occupational Health & Safety legislation Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and other funding agreements Prepare employment letters, notices, HR reports, and documentation required for governance processes
4. Culture, Wellness & Community Engagement Promote culturally safe HR practices aligned with Cree values, language, and community protocols Support staff wellness, retention, and belonging, particularly in a northern and remote work context Assist with orientation for staff new to Canada or new to working in First Nations communities Participate in community events, cultural learning opportunities, and professional development activities
Education & Certification
CIHR (Chartered Institute of Human Resources) preferred designation or Alternative recognized HR certification, post-secondary education, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Commitment to continuous professional learning Experience 3-5 years of progressive human resources experience
Demonstrated experience working with First Nations communities, Indigenous organizations, or culturally grounded environments
Experience in education, public sector, or non-profit settings is an asset Experience using HRIS and payroll systems (Sage preferred)
Knowledge & Skills Strong knowledge of Canadian and Alberta employment legislation
High level of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical judgment Excellent communication, organization, and relationship-building skills
Ability to work independently in a small, collaborative team
Comfort navigating both policy-driven and community-based decision-making environments
